In January my mother-in-laws partner died in Spain where they lived. The situation made us realise how difficult it would be if she fell ill out there or, heaven forbid, died. The legal process is completely different and they like to have the funeral within 24 hours.

My wife is the only family she really has. Over the last few weeks she has got increasingly concerned about how we'd be able to help from the other side of the world if the worst happened, and was starting to swing against going. I argued we can't let her Mum's decisions rule ours.

My mother-in-laws partner had dual Kiwi/British nationality, but didn't want to go back to NZ (something to do with a run-in with the taxman...) His family were desperate for him to go back and had offered to pay the air fares over. Now that he's died they are still enthusiastic for my mother-in-law to go over. In retrospect, they should have got PR sorted before he died - but now that's to late.

The good news is that last night on the phone she said that she'd come to NZ if we did! I can't say what a big weight that is off my wifes shoulders. It's going to cause problems with cost etc, and we'd have to sponsor her, but I think we may back on track again.

Just thought I'd share a little good news!

That IS good. How people feel inside is so important while all the planning is happening, isn't it?
