Am I a skilled worker or not?!?

I know this kind of question is asked alot.... but...

According to the immigration lawyer I spoke to recently he assured me I was a skilled worker. And I have seen in the past on a government website that my and my missus' jobs were on a "needed" list. But I cannot find ANYWHERE wether i am actually a skilled worker.

Obviously this has a huge impact on my EOI.

I currently work for London Underground as a manager. I have about 110 employees. I'm responsible for everything that goes on in the section that i manage. This includes EVERYTHING from Health and safety (and the legislation) to employee disputes and disciplinary... and incident/emergency management.

I have also been in revenue investigation and protection... and been in training/facilitating.

The trouble is, apart from minor qualifications (eg NVQ and and basic secondary certificates) all my qualifications are internal work certs. I have been working in the company for some time (over 10 years) and have had some prestigious jobs with them.

I think the biggest "recognized" cap is that i am a qualified NVQ assessor, meaning i can assess people obtaining NVQ qualifications themselves.

My partner also works for London Underground as a control room operative. Her job was also on the list I saw a while ago, but like me the job qualification is given by the company themselves.

Any feedback would be appreciated :)

Len, did the agent say which category you'd come under? If not, are you still able to contact him for clarification?

I just had a quick glance at the skilled shortage lists and can't find anything "transporty". Perhaps he had you down as someone who could fit the Project Manager type roles or management in transport area?

Until you know which skillset he had you down for then it will be hard to ascertain which skill slot he'd allocated.

Hi Len

Its nice to actually hear of a couple who seem to be in the same frustrating position my husband and I are in!!

We are in the early throws of getting the wheels in motion for a move to NZ with our 3 young kiddies, but seem to be getting nowhere fast!

My husband has worked for the worlds favourite airline (!!) for 22 years and is a supervisor of many staff and responsible for the safe departure of aircraft. I was a qualified Sales Agent within the same company for 12 years and between us we could probably run Auckland airport!! BUT - exactly as you say, all of our qualifications and experience are internal only and are not actually recognised in 'the real world'!!

We went along to the NZ Expo at Earl's Court in October and although Air New Zealand had a Sales Rep. there, who informed me that they are doing a huge overseas recruitment drive, we still haven't had any interesting job offers! What we did find out was probably the best route to go down is the 'Managerial skills' one! Haven't really looked into it an awful lot but I thought I'd share with you what bits we have found out!

It would be nice to hear from you should you find out anymore than this which may be of interest...!!

Good Luck

Thanks guys...

I believe that the agent had managerial roles in mind. Being an Operational manager makes a cross over an easy thing to do. You don't get your hands dirty so to speak... you just manage on a more stragical level.

I've started to consider going the WTR route but would like to know if that is running down a dead end. I make enough points as long as i have a job but need to be sure that it is a move that will stick rather then work hard and leave a good job/situation here to be denied in NZ and have to kind of start again.

Surprisingly enough 'management' counts as a skilled job (well, my staff all laughed when I told them, anyway) :D

AFAICR a job offer has to be 'skilled employment'. There's a PDF here (http://www2.stats.govt.nz/domino/external/web/carsweb.nsf/94772cd5918085044c2567e6007eec2c/ef7c87fcece9546ccc2568c40000836e/$FILE/NZSCO991.pdf) which lists all the categories of jobs (if that doesn't work there's a link to the NZ Standard Classification of Occupations here (http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/stream/work/skilledmigrant/)).
Have a look at page 46, where you'll find '12214 Transport Managers'. As I understand it, if you (a) have a job offer and (b) that job is skilled employment you can apply for PR.
