Burke Bros sent us a letter from their NZ partner in Auckland in response to my questions about paying GST. I do not touch type, so I will just include the section of most importance:

'So it is now of some importance that you should warn your clients that if they do not have PR or a WP for at least 12 months when they arrive here, they will have to pay duty and GST and will not get it back. I might say that customs seem to be using some discretion with regard to valuations. Today I dealt with a client from Europe whose effects carried a valuation of $100,000, but Customs depreciated this down to £20,000, which minimised the impact on this client. This new policy has been in effect for 2 or 3 months now.'

Hope this helps. By my calculations they would have had to pay about $3000 in duty & customs.

Lockstock - if you are reading; how much did you you have to pay on your container (if you don't mind me asking)?

Best wishes, Fi.

Marshanite,

Are you using Burke Bros? I have Mr Burke coming round Tuesday to do us a quote - still deciding whether to take everything so need a full container or leave the big furniture here ( sell to new buyer) and then get part ofa container. Any advice? How did you find them?

I found the rep very nice & he made a point of stressing how catefully they pack everything, however Excess int. movers qouted us for 700 cf & Burke bros thought it would be a full 20ft container. Therefore the price difference is about £300, so I think we are going to go with Excess.

Fi.
