I have just been told by the company that I have decided to ship some stuff over to NZ with (PPS) that unless you are entering the country on a PR, then there will be GST charged on any goods that are shipped into the country.
He mentioned that it would be market value, so presumably they couldn't charge as if stuff was brand new, if it is obviously used goods.
We're only looking at shipping over about 4/5 tea chest sized boxes containing general household goods, photos, clothes and a few tools. We're now worried that there'll be a massive charge to pay at the other end.
How can they put a value on things such as clothes and photos???

Hi
Not exactly much help but thought would share with you anyway!
We shipped 12 boxes over but had work visas. We paid around £500 which also included insurance, and that was it. They took best part of 2mths to get here and we did get a shedfull of paperwork from NZ Vanlines saying there would be all sorts of costs we had to pay before we got our stuff, which worried me immensly, but we were lucky and never paid anything.
HTH in some way.

Hi
We just had the mother inlaw's stuff shipped over. It was the contents of her two bed house most of it she has had along time so we had to guess what it was worth. I think you need PR or a visa of at least 3 years and that is the original one in your passport to get away without paying GST. Customs only charged about $600 which we thought was not to bad.

If you have a work visa of 12 months or more you are no longer charged GST.
If you come over on a visitor, WHV, or less than 1 year work visa you will be charged GST. I think that's what it boils down to. Correct me if I'm wrong?
I think I had a vaguely informative (:laugh) link in one of those other posts.
Also, seems someone posted how things are valued. It's age based-as in the age of the items. For photos though I have no idea.
I'm hoping that it's based on your declarations of value that you make with the shippers and insurers.

Don't base the value on your insurance value as they will sting you on GST. We were also charged duty but this is not a set amount. We were told by the shippers at this end that we didn't have to include clothes.
