Right I have tried to find the answers to this, but thought, hey, it's probably quicker just to ask, so here I am.
We are hoping to be able to get over to NZ on a work permit, (OH job on ISSL), but I have a few questions.
1. Can you get a visa without a job offer?
2. Will you get a job offer without a visa?
3. Will our children be able to attend school without international fees? (I think they will need student visas)
4. If we have jobs sorted in NZ, we can apply for PR from there, right?
Sorry about all the questions, I feel a bit confused about how to get into NZ right now, and having the kids, makes me anxious about coming as visitors and sorting everything out from NZ.
As usual all advice appreciated!

4. yes, definitely
not 100% sure on the others.
You can apply for PR without a job offer (and get PR without a job offer, if they decide to say yes) but not sure what happens with all the different types of visas

Hi
Unsure sorry on a lot you ask, but can confirm that you can apply for PR over here. The process took matter of few weeks, hubbys job was on skilled shortages list.
We did this, came over on work visas for us and a student visa for our son. We came over in April and started the process soon after, our son who was then 4.5 started a Kindy then a Learning Centre.

Sorry for the millions of questions, feel a bit confused as what route to take to try and get in NZ.

From what I have gathered on here if you have a work visa then you can apply for a student visa for your children and you won't have to pay international fees.
This is the route we are going to go (when OH gets over his fairly major wobble!) get over there apply and hopefully get a job then get visas then go for PR. :)

Hi,
So are you going over as visitors then looking for a job while out there? I just don't know which way to go. The visa system seems tricky unless you have a job, and job offers less likely without a visa. :wah
So is your OH having a wobble about the move? Sorry if I am being too nosey, ignore me!

Hi Helen
We didnt pay any international school fees, only the fees for him actually attending the kindy/centre.
I think you are exempt from paying them if you have a work visa, but please dont quote me. I am sure someone will be able to help you further.

For 1) AFAIK to get a work visa requires you to have a job offer (except PR).
2) It is possible, but seems to depend on type of work, would expect more likely if job is on ISSL as they can't get workers in NZ.
3) If you get work visas then you can also get student visas for your children which will allow them to go to school and pay domestic rates. This doesn't include tertiary education where you would pay international fees unless you have PR
4) You can apply for PR at any time, with or without a job, it's just that a job gives you a lot of points and makes it more likley that your PR will be granted.
It should be noted that its not really visas but permits that I am talking about as visas only allow you to arrive in NZ and are not needed if you are already there.

Your not being nosey! :laugh
He has had a huge wobble but things look to be back on track now thankfully! We were looking to be there for May but it's looking more like Sept now and yes that is the route we are going to take - it seems impossible to get a job offer from this end (that was part of his worry). He is more reluctant than me to uproot the kids in the 'hope' he can get a job once we get there.
Although we are going to start the process for PR now rather than when we get there but we will only have 120 points without the offer so it might not go through until we get there and bump up the points with a job.
