I did a quick comparison survey (trademe to ebay.co.uk) of a random Japanese car picked out at random, year 2000, and the NZ cars came out so expensive I didn't believe the results, so I'll have to do something a bit more comprehensive when I have time. It can't possibly be the case that NZ vendors want $8-10K for a car that would only cost £1500 here if it had a low mileage, and would be scrap if it had a high mileage.

I was given to understand that used cars were cheap in NZ, due to a flooded market, cheap Japanese imports etc. Is that not the case?
No they're not cheap in real terms.

Yep, that's right. To get the real cheap cars (<$2,000), you have to buy pre-1995, high-mileage cars. Scary.
BTW-if anyone has a solid $1,500 car (an oxymoron?), I'm in the market :yes

I just bought a 1992 Nissan ute. Only 71k on the clock but 6500 dollars

Well, it is a ute;) My soon-to-be-ex 1995 Toyota Townace set me back $4800. 250K on the odometer though.
I'm thinking of buying something along the lines of a 1990 Mazda Familia. Those tend to be around $1000-$1500. Yay for being a student!

In our case a resounding no...that's why we returned to the UK. We quickly grew very tired of struggling to make ends meet and looking forward to each fortnights pay cheque....:no

There was a forum poll a while back asking 'Do You Prefer New Zealand To Your Country Of Origin'.
http://www.emigratenz.org/forum/showthread.php?t=8351
About 14% preferred their old country, 19% were undecided and 67% preferred New Zealand.
I voted a wholehearted yes - I prefer living here to the UK by a long, long way.
