Have been looking on trademe to get an idea of areas and houses and so on, my question is - do all landlords and agencies use trademe?

We're going to be living around Auckland, probably north shore - is there a local paper that people use for advertising their properties, would people just stick up notices outside their properties or stick ads in the supermarkets or shop windows?

Trademe is the largest real estate listing in the country, so it certainly the best place to start. Ads are placed in the other spots you listed, but they are harder to find unless you live locally, and they are usually not as numerous.

Also worth checking out http://www.realestate.co.nz/ and some other estate agents that act as rental agents.

The main newspaper for the area will have certain days of the week when they will list loads of rentals. It is advised to buy this paper early and get in touch early as the good ones tend to go very quickly.

We found there were also at least as many (if not more) advertised in the local Saturday paper (Hawke's Bay Today in our case). Also there are less hoops to jump through if you rent privately as opposed to through an agent. It all depends I suppose if you want to have a place lined up before you arrive, or if you can afford to wait off to find something when you arrive.

the plan is to rent a bach or similar for a couple of weeks while we look for a rental - which we want to live in for about 18 months or so before thinking about buying (yes I know thats planning far too far ahead, but we like to plan, doesn't matter if events don't work out that way in the end...)

so yes we've planned a couple of weeks for looking around once we land in auckland :D I can't imagine ever agreeing to a long term rent without having walked round the property myself
