Tell me about it , had filling fall out over Christmas, no worries left it till new year to sort but 170 Dollars to fix ,ouch .

Had check whilst there as had gone 9 months from last one and he reckons there are 4 more fillings to be done..........Reckon as soon as I opened my mouth he's thought " ah ha another loaded brit, we'll sting him " oh if only the case.

Going to have to work very hard to pay for these :D :D

I know it's scary isn't it! The only upside is that the dentistry seems of an excellent standard (if you can afford it).

God, our healthcare is atrocious. Those prices sound pretty good to me.

I am having a tooth ache that I am not even sure where it is coming from. Went to the dentist (he accepted to see me after hours :) ) cost $175 for him to take 2 xrays and reffering me to the gum specialist.
This afternoon it was my 3rd appointment with the specialist, at the end he said that it is quite hard him to find which tooth is hurting and there is only one main nerve connected to that area. Well still he gave me another appointment without knowing what is wrong and today I was brave enough to ask the nurse how much would I needed to pay in total for the end of next appointment, she checked and said around $400-$450... This is only poking around and checking under the gums.
I am not so sure I would like to pay some more so the guy can just checks my gums and pokes around. I found it hard to accept.

Ours is around $65 for 30 mins to 1 hour.

I'll happily pay to see the dentist here or in the UK. But the standard of care, array of equipment etc at our dentist, is way above the UK ones IMHO :)

I go private for dentistry as I couldn't find an NHS dentist with capacity, and I can afford to pay so I wouldn't want to rob some kid or old lady of a place just so I could get my dentistry on the cheap. Those prices sound comparable if not somewhat cheaper than I pay here, although I doubt if the quality of work is any better (private dentistry tends to be much better than NHS, imho).

Anyway, doesn't sound that bad to me (apart from the $4000 job from pie-eater!).

From what I hear here in the UK, experience with NHS dentists is different in different areas, maybe even in different practices. The practice we'd been with for 35 years here in our town suddenly announced that they were going private. The other local practice had no space for more NHS patients, but we heard about a new practice starting up in the next town, 10 miles away, and signed up there. They're in a brand new building with high-tech equipment I'd never seen before, and seem kindly, caring and efficient.

To be honest I think their undercharging!

My god I wish the gas plumber I hired last week was so cheap!

If you have a good level of income - its all fine.
But if you dont.....you just dont go.
Believe me - I know!
I've been very lucky - have avoided going for 12 years. Mainly because my OH has had to have treatment in that time.
I now have a $1600 root canal bill looming and it is a big concern about how to pay it.

In the good old days (Victoria??) - they used to take womens' teeth out before they got married so that wouldn't be an expense to the husband after marriage.
Now there's a solution!
:nice1;)

Shop around for a dentist. Dentistry is in the private sector in NZ and in my experience there are big differences in fees from dentist to dentist. Our first dentist cost $100+ for a filling. I didn't like his treatment much and went to a different one who I discovered charged $60 for a filling AND seems more skillful. (It's a while since I had a filling so I don't know if prices will have gone up.)

Yes i must admit the service is amazing i trust my dentist completely she told me everything and showed me everything she had to do, i do believe i need the fillings unlike in the UK where i think they just filled them to get more money out of me and i would rather pay for good service than have the dentist i had in Essex, but my point was that how do people on low incomes cope............ suppose they dont go to the dentist.
OH saw the hygienist the other day and was charged $190 and was told he needed to see her every six months, i told him he could just pay me and id clean his teeth for him! :yes

I had a checkup and scale and polish just before I left the UK and it cost £120 - NHS dentists certainly in Scotland thing of the past so think low income families in UK probably in the same boat.

I had a root canal done in the UK about 2 years ago,our dentist was private and we paid monthly, if you went to the dentist or not.

Ste had an x ray and wisdom tooth out here last week and it cost 130 dollars and he had no waiting around.

I thought that was pretty good.
