Hi,
I have been doing some research on Bill 148-2, the Identity( Citizenship and Travel Documents) bill introduced by Bill Hawkins :eek . It had it second reading in December and I believe it may be voted upon in late February when Parliament returns. However, it could be that more revisions will be proposed before a final vote. It is on its second or third read- I don't know much about the process in NZ.
The official citizenship site says changes would take place in early 2005,with those people who get PR after the bill is in effect, to be placed on the 5 year citizenship status, if the bill passes.
This is the bill that changes citizenship from 3 years after PR to 5 years after PR, if it remains in its' current format. If the legislative process is anything like they are in the US, a bill can be significantly modified and amended before a final vote. I know there are some people on the forum who may be interested, so I thought I would provide an update. I think someone posted the question in one of the new forums but when I came back to post it, I could not find the new forum link. Am I going nuts? I keep tabs on this and report any new info.
I also question whether this law, if it passed- will stay in effect, if it decreases immigration even more. It seems like immigration is keeping house prices and the economy rolling and with the ridiculously low salaries they are STILL insisting on paying in NZ despite the shortages of qualified staff, the immigration rolls are decreasing rather dramatically.
