I just wondered if there are many jobs working with children in NZ, apart from the teaching jobs?
It is becoming apparent that the job I really want, may be just out of reach, so as a plan B, I am wondering if there are other opportunities which don't require the NZ only qualification for Early Years Teachers.
If anyone has a crumb of hope, please send it this way!!

Hi
Well I am in the final year of a degree in Childhood and Youth Studies, which has been a mixture of child psychology, child development, social and cultural studies of childhood etc. Experience is my downfall really, I have three children, so haven't had much time to get paid work experience. I have done quite a bit of voluntary work in a primary school, with all ages up to 9. I can get references for this, but like I say I have no paid employment history working with children.
Hope this is ok?

What age group does this qual cover?...is it early childhood?? 0-8 years?

It's 0-18. I started it originally with primary teaching in mind, and have been told by teacher training providers here they would accept it for primary teaching.
I think it is going to be one of those annoying things which holds us back, as we didn't want to moe to NZ without us both in work after the first year or two.

I should have said I did contact the NZ teacher training people, who said I may be able to do an extra year for the ECE qualification, but someone else with more experience etc than me, has said they were told there were limited spaces.

You would have to get it assessed...if you want me to be totally honest I think you may experience some difficulties as it is 0-18 yrs...for early childhood they like the study and experience to be specifically related to 0-8 years.
When do you move out here? Can you fit in any paid PT experience in EYE before you come? It may be worth emailing Kindergartens in NZ, telling them your quals and seeing what they say....

There may have been limited places when the person you know applied...but who knows now??? EYE is up and coming in NZ and is recognised as an important career and profession...I am sure you would get on a course. Where are you moving too??
I think if you did the specific year related to EYE, your chances of employment and getting registered would increased ten fold.

Thanks for your help, we are still in the early planning stages so no plans properly started yet. We would have to sell our house if we wanted to make the move so are doing LOTS of research. Finding out I might have trouble getting a job might just be the end of the dream. :no
Better to find out now, than before we sell up though.
We are off to the Expo in April, so I will ask there before I totally give up. Being on the final course of my degree, I really don't want to have to start again with something new.
Oh well, that's why were doing so much research!

Sorry just read this after I typed previous message... there is still hope! To be honest we don't know where we would be moving to, depends on OH job really as it's likely I wouldn't work for the first year and wed use some savings if needed to get by. North Island though, but that's all we have decided so far.

Helen ,
DOn't GIVE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Where there is a will there's a way!!!
I have my quals and experience and I am completing a work book and gathering evidence together to become registered. Often when your in the UK these things seem like mountains...but when you get here...they are just small hills compared to emigrating!!!!!
There is always a way.......
If youve got any more questions just pm/ask!
Someone may post on here with the same quals as you....and have had success....
Good Luck

What about doing Home based childcare when you arrive? You could be at home, work the hours you want, earn some money and gain the experience required to complete the EYE qual?

Hi again,
Sorry to bug you! Just found an Open University course:
Certificate in Early Years Practice, which runs from October to June, do you think this would be beneficial, as it's a hands-on course, so would prove I had some work experience also?
Promise that will be the last question today!

Helen,
Ask away!!!! Thats what the forum is here for!!!!
I would email nzqa...I wouldn't want to commit to saying 'yes do it' and then it not be recognised. My initial reaction is that it can only be a positive move to gain further quals specific to ECE and gain the experience...if it was me, and I had your quals and I wanted to work in ECE I would do it!

Yes, I would be more than happy to do that type of work. Is there a lot of home based work available then? Sounds like it would be ideal for me, particularly if we move over sooner rather than later, as my youngest is only 3.
I am feeling a bit more positive knowing there might be something there for me!

Yes, there is lots of Home Based work over here, I am regional manager over here for a home based programme in the Bay.
You just have to have a police check and so does your partner.Your house ( doesnt mater if you own or rent) will be checked, eg, fully fenced, cupboard locks, etc. Here in NZ the home based system is different...you have to be registered with a service, this service will apply for your police check, do your home safety check, potentially pay for 2 papers of your qualification, provide all equipment, eg, car seats, toys, smoke alarms. You will have a co-oridnator that visits you every month to check you are still meeting the standards and they are there to provide you with support. They put on training and ensure you are receiving continued professional development, and they will usually provide a free playgroup.
Each service is different.....if you want anymore specific details about the service I work for PM me!
This is just an overall picture for you

The 'person' may have been me?! I've applied to Uni of Auckland to study the one year ECE Grad. Diploma and to my dismay have been told today that there are very few places and it is very over-subscribed. I'm so disheartened, again, as this was plan B, to forgo a yr's income and study but then be in with a chance to get one of the many, many Ec jobs. But if I can't study the ONLY qualification that would enable that to happen, what now?? Holland, do you have any ideas. I was so hopeful that the study path would work but now really stumped.

Hi
Yes, sorry I was meaning you, I hope you don't mind?
When are you expecting to hear one way or another from Auckland Uni? It's so hard to know what to do isn't it?
Anyway, fingers crossed Auckland Uni will give you the chance to study there, you certainly seem to have the qualifications and experience already.
Good luck.

Carey...
they may not be able to apply for MoE funding, but there is a provisionally registered teacher support grant that can be applied for.
I really think you will have more doors opened to you when you are here. I kind of gave up with looking in the Uk as I felt I was getting nowhere fast, but I had a job within 3 weeks of being here.
When you ring/email from the UK, you will probably be getting 'procedure' and 'regulations' and 'its our policy'...type statements...when you are here, you can impress them with your skills and knowledge and these procedures become a little more malleable!!!!!!

And Oh not at all keen to just come over in the hope I may get a job that I'm not qualified for ! Understandable really! GHGHGH, its so frustrating.........

Holland thank you, our replies are out of sink now but do apprecaite yours so keep them coming! That's interesting about the provisionally registered grant; perhaps I'll drop a mention of it into the next conversation I have with an EY centre and see if it is taken on board.

Yes OH in conservation here but Dept. of Cons. in NZ can't employ anyone who's not a NZ citizen or has PR as one govt. dept can't be seen to be favouring another, apparently. He may get work once in Nz but it's a highly over subscribed field (excuse the pun) . Seems we picked the wrong professions!
