We're still at the discussion stage but there may be a medical problem that could cause one of us problems. I'd like to check things out before we actually start 'our journey' as I'd hate to find this could hold us back. Can I talk to someone on the medical side of things before we go any further? I went to my local GP and he didn't think it would be a problem but he doesn't really know much about the (quite rare) condition or the emigration process. He advised talking to the 'emigration people first.' Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Hello Gina,
If I were you I would phone or email INZ with your question.
In my experience INZ are not so much worried about medical conditions as the prognosis, i.e. will it cause problems (read: medical costs) in the future. If your GP or specialist can put in writing that he/she does not expect problems (again read: costs) it should not prevent your getting a visa.

I'm concerned about this too, my daughter was born with a heart condition which has now been corrected. She has been fit and well since then and not on medication. My husband has an artificial heart valve, and is on warfarin. He has been fit and well since that was done 8 years ago.

I have found myself getting into a 'discussion' with my GP when asking for a letter about my prognosis for my type 2 diabeties. He basically refused to put anything in writing, be it good or bad. Where do I go from here? Ask a different doctor?

Hi Gina
I would try and call NZ House and see if they can help or point you in the right direction.
Also, you can email them, which again i have done, it takes about 48hrs or so for a reply, and you have to register, etc online before hand. This may be an option too.
It is quite a pricey call, think about £1 per minute and after about 5 mins of pressing this button and that button, you will eventually get through to a 'person'. Saying that, i found it useful with a query i had, although not a medical one, and £18 i spent on the call was worth it.
I am sure that there is someone that will be able to help you with your query.
I guess its too personal to pop on the forum ? There may be someone on here that may have been in the same boat if you understand me ?
Good luck, I am sure you will decide whats best option for you.
Sharon

Hi Sharon, thanks for your reply. We went to a Emigration Group seminar and I explained my situation to one of their reps there. He told me to get in touch with a doctor in New Zealand who had knowledge of the emigration process (can't remember the connection). We also signed up for their consultation so I think that may have helped!! I really wasn't really expecting to hear back but he emailed me advising me to get a letter from the specialist. He didn't seem to think we had a major problem, especially if New Zealand needed us. I think I just wanted to know if a 'medical person' thought it was a definate No. The problem isn't common knowledge yet so thats why I haven't said too much.

a couple of things you can consider.
1 asking another doctor, there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to get a statement on your medical condition - presumably they do annual reviews and there should at minimum be notes for that, which should suffice for additional notes for the medical as they will do blood tests anyway.
2. consult a private diabetic specialist, to be assessed and reported on, this will probably cost you about 15o quid, but it's an option if you can't get any joy out of your GP.
You may also be able to ask to see your medical records, I'm not sure if you can take photocopies of this, but it might help if you can (see point 1 for the kind of thing you want to see)

Thanks for that Dusk. I'll go to one of the other doctors in my GP practice, and ask them for something in writing. I just thought it was odd that he wouldn't give me anything, even when I offered to pay. Perhaps he was having a bad hair day or something.
Cheers
Jeannie
