This may seem like a stupid question....:roll

Did anyone take out travel insurance for the 1st few weeks when they emigrated?

Not sure if it would be valid or not if you are not living in the UK any more.

Can anyone shine any light on this one for us?

Hello Heidi,
Not a stupid question at all!
We are actually planning to take out insurance for a bit longer than just the first few weeks. There are companies specialized in socalled expat insurance. Don't know of any in UK (we're in Holland). Regular insurance stops as soon as you leave the country or rather when you no longer have an in-country address so these insurance companies fill that niche.
I am sure someone here will be able to point you in the direction of a UK insurer.

Hi...

We got travel insurance for the first motnh here as this was when we were in hotel accomodation, and then we just replaced it with house insurance now we are renting...not a silly question at all, this was one of my last minute jobs when I was in the Uk, as I was unsure what to do!

Insure & Go have quoted for travel insurance that stops 24 hours after going through immigration....I was going to go for that. Not sure if that is the right decision though?

We used Down Under Insurance - Duinsure.com which specialises in insurance for Oz and NZ. From what I remember it's a one way insurance that covers travel, belongings etc and you can choose the length of time you want it for. I think we had cover for about 3-4 weeks to cover us for the time we'd booked a holiday cottage whilst we looked around for a permanent rental, at which stage we took out a permanent household goods policy. I wouldn't choose to stop cover as soon as you arrive in the country as if you had goods stolen from a holiday rental say, you wouldn't be covered for their theft. We just found it easier to sort out the 1st months cover before we left home so we had peace of mind that at least we were covered. There are others who do it but we found their quote was competitive and easily and instantly arranged online.
Hope that helps.

We just did our's throught the post office - on the phone the morning of our flights out :D Was about £80 I think and they would only insure us for up to 17 days. Got household insurance as soon as moved into the rental.

We used Go-walkabout as they had good comprehensive covert that was not too expensive and lasted about 17 days after arrival. You could extent the cover too if you find that you are not in more permanent accommodation after that time.

Hi we did the same as Peebles we have insured with the Post Office, about a month ago. Still £80. For 2 adults one way emigration purposes up to 9 days. You can have more days I think up to 17 but it costs more. You are covered from when you pay for the insurance up to departure, flights any stop overs for up to the amount of days you need.
