Hopefully someone can help with this one as I don't know how strict MAF will be. I gather they are fussy about grass stuff, rust etc. Do people bother taking their lawnmowers, gardening tools, DIY tools etc and to what extent do you need to clean them up paint them etc? We have a perfectly good self-propel petrol mower for instance and don't know whether we should sell it or take it. Kim

We brought our garden tools, DIY tools and my chainsaw over from UK, gave them a good cleaning, had them inspected by MAF and no problems.
Made sure there was no oil/petrol left in chainsaw:nice1

We bought all our DIY tools & just gave them a good clean & OK for us. Didn't clean a garden chair very well & had cobwebs & sawdust on & are having to have that cleaned by The Moving Company at a cost of $25, only a cheap chair & not worth it but less than destroying it so just make sure you clean it well!

Rent yourself a steam cleaner (not just a jet washer) and clean everything to within an inch of it's life, and you'll be fine. I spent a day of my life doing this to everything - lawnmowers, bikes, tools, footballs, football boots - basically anything and everything that you can think of that could have come into contact with soil at some stage. I remember thinking what a complete and utter waste of time, effort and money.
Then, when we took delivery of our stuff, every single potential bio-hazard had been opened and inspected. Needless to say we passed the MAF inspection, however it does pay to be thorough because they really do check in detail.

We brought all our garden furniture and tools apart from a rotary airer as we couldn't get all the muck out of the hollow pole thing. Wish we had tried harder to clean it as they cost about $400 here for a decent one. We cleaned all of our outdoor stuff with hot soapy water then disinfected with jays fluid and oiled all the electrical type stuff to protect it while shipping. We also gave our furniture a coat of teak oil. We even disinfected some of our favourite outdoor plant pots...which MAF inspected and were happy with.

Totally agree, we did exactly the same - cleaned it, disinfected it, oiled it, packed it.
Sorry if I sounded a bit like Peter Kay there.....:laugh
