When we leave GB for our wonderful new life in a few months, will I be able to take mine and my family's records from out of the doctors we all attend?

What if the new G.P wanted to look at lets say blood test results from an earlier complaint? Or just general well being from your previous history.

Iv'e got a feeling it will be a no but not sure.

Thanks

I'm not sure about the UK, however in the US your medical record is just that, your record. Only you are able to access your record, but there should be no reason you shouldn't be able to take your medical record with you, especially since you'll be quite a few hours away.

Jan,

Like most things in the UK - I am sure they will send it to your new doctors ....but for a stupid fee!! Not sure though.....just guessing

Perhaps I had better call my `Ever so pleasant doctors receptionist`and ask the question.

Her immediate un-polite response will probably get up my nose, there will be a ' I don,t know if we can do that' or 'There will be a charge' thats when I will have been left waiting for about 5 mins for her to answer the phone. I do appreciate how busy they are but their mannerism ( at our surgery) is horrendous.

Thanks

Check out this website and perhaps print a copy and take with you to doctors in case of any problems!

Hope this helps!

Cloudboy,
Technically you are right, your record is yours, meaning you have access and the right to copy it. However the file which the doctor or hospital has belongs to them. And in this day and age of lawsuits, HIPAA, insurance company and governmental rights to review a physicians records anytime, without notice, the reality is you will not be able to just walk out of an office with your chart. It is to risky for the doctor to just let a chart go. Another benefit of NZ, no malpractice attorneys!

Hi,
I was just about to say that you have the right to access your medical files but you may incurr a small charge. Paul has beaten me to it though.

Nice link

For a photocopy of our records, our Doctors surgery wanted GBP50.00 per person :eek. Most of what the childrens notes would say is in their red books. I decided I could probably do without it.

I registered yesterday at a Doctors surgery in Christchurch and apart from showing them a copy of my last smear results(I didn't want to have to do that again :no ) they didn't want anything else. Luke is going to the doctors today after school and all they said was to bring his health book with us.

My doctors which is the one at Bryn next to the chemist printed off the kids full records for nothing while I waited (they are really nice though).

I am sure they would do the same for me probably going back say 5 years if I asked.
