We want to have some privacy from our next door neighbours, so can anyone suggest an evergreen hedge?

I guess its too much to ask for a fast growing variety that stops at about 6 ft tall? :D

A dense evergreen climber would be another possibility ...

You can get privet here, thats the traditional hedge material....

How about giant bamboo? I've been considering growing some as a windbreak on our land, but I bet it would make a cool hedge. Or, a fence covered in virginia creeper looks nice.

What about asking at your local plant nursery or specialist for something suitable and speedy? That way they should know what will suit your soil conditions and situation.

Or is it possible to put up trellis and grow a creeper up that, something dense like the broad leaf varigated ivy?

Pittosporum eugenioides is used a lot in Auckland for hedges, grows fast & looks nice. And it's a native which is always a plus. :nice1

I can do you a nice line in pittisporum if you like? They grow like weeds down here and would take over if I didn't pull them out. They're around $15 a plant in Mitre 10 type places

You can get privet here, thats the traditional hedge material....

You can, but I wouldn't recommend it, as it is classified as a noxious plant by many councils in NZ. (Although I presume there may well be other varieties of privet than those mentioned which aren't noxious.)

Auckland City says this:
Privet

There are two species of privet, Chinese Privet and Tree Privet. Both are invasive and are no longer able to be sold, propagated, distributed or commercially displayed.

They have been declared a National Surveillance Plant Pest by the Auckland Regional Council to prevent further spread by human activities. You are encouraged to remove or control privet growing on your property, but its removal is not mandatory. For more information refer to the Environment section in www.arc.govt.nz.

We have a couple of trees in our garden that look decidedly privet-ish.....

Hmm... back to drawinbg board... oooh, how about manuka? you can keep them short and bushy, or let them grow into trees, come to think of it, I see manuka quite a lot used along the front of properties? the other thing we have in our garden that might suit is Hebe, but its not exactly fast growing.....

Sam B - our next door neighbour has a 'bamboo fence' at the end of her garden, they've grown to about 20ft - quite incredible to look at!

I think ideally we'll find somewhere that sells larger specimens, if our budget allows it, as we don't want to wait a year or two for privacy.
