I've been reading where a lot of you folks have had a job offer before arriving in NZ. How does one secure a job offer??? I know this would increase my point value on my EOI but it would also bring a lot of peace of mind knowing where I'll be working, etc.....not that I'm up for the adventure of looking for a job while I'm there but I'm just curious as to how people are being offered jobs before they go :)

It isn't as easy for people in the US (not that it is easy for the UK people..but) as we don't have an immigration Expo to go to. NZ doesn't really market to the US as it does to the UK. At least that is the impression I get. Could be wrong, but I've never seen any. I've never heard of emigration ads of any kind in the US.
Other people have been fortunate with their job seeking endeavors in assorted skilled professions and some go on a short trip to interview (shows serious intent to prospective employers who may otherwise be wary of hiring overseas applicants) then make the move later on.

Apart from looking for work at the Expos, some people have contacted agencies and businesses in NZ, by email, letter or phone, and been interviewed online.

Not sure how easy it easy but that's how OH got job offer - trawling websites and applying directly to employers. Video conference interview and psychometric testing on line and he got the job! Try www.seek.co.nz for vacancies.

Best of luck

We are in the US, and while we can't get a job offer from here, we were able to arrange a ton of interviews once we arrive. Out of many interviews, we should be able to get an offer very quickly.

It does depend on your field. For some areas within IT (for example) it is easy to find jobs even when you are not in NZ. They do have a lot of positions that need skilled folks. Good luck.

Don't know about your situation, but here's my story.

I've got some experience in wind energy. Went to the NZ wind energy association website, emailed any company whose role was of any interest to me, got some responses, and took them from there. Sent resumes to those who requested them.

And, I ended up with a job offer. It's still all rather amazing to me!

It's certainly possible to secure a job before arriving in NZ but to make sure the job and location and people are right for you I think it's best to be in New Zealand.

... definitely agree with you there, it'll be interesting to know how many people are still in the same job and location after first moving to NZ. My wife's been offered various nursing jobs (within her field) across both the North & South Island, but as yet is not committing to anything until we've completed our 3 week 'recce' trip at the end of April and decided on an area that suits our needs.

Good luck :nice1

Hi

Hubby is a Joiner by trade and his profession is on the skills shortage.

I spent an age putting his CV on the employment agencies, but no one really wanted to know until we stepped on NZ land so to speak.

Then, purely by accident, I found a Joinery website, put his CV on there, and we were contacted by another company that asked permission to put his CV on their website, for people in that trade.

Within a week, we had loads of emails asking for pics etc of his work, and more info.

This then resulted in 3 job offers, which he was telephone interviewed for all of them. They were at Auckland, Wellington and Hawkes Bay.

Firstly we decided on the one in Wellington, then when the Hawkes Bay one came through, we decided on that one, purely as we were not used to living in a big city, the climate and the lifestyle. All packages offered were virtually same.

After a year in, we know we made the right decision. His employers are great, have been so supportive and he is very happy there, evern being promoted to Foreman just before Christmas time.

We have travelled to Wellington for the weekend at Christmas time, and although it is a beautiful city, its way too busy for us. We have yet to get to Auckland, but gather this is pretty much the same.

It was virtually 6 weeks from start to finish to get over here, from the job offer to us landing here in NZ.

Hi Sharon... I see from your signature that you started your EOI, ITA, etc. once you'd arrived in NZ... what did you have to arrange / have in place before flying out to NZ, i.e. medicals, working visa, etc?

Thanks

I too would be really interested to know what the joinery website is as my OH is a joiner too and so far we've found the same as you did, ie. that employers and agencies are not interested until he's actually booked his flights to go out there. Thanks!

Hi

We came on 1yr work visas for us and a student one for our son, only because we had 6wks to sort. All i did was complete the paperwork and pay the fees really.

We also shipped over 12 boxes, so needed a visa for that too.

... thanks for that, we're seriously thinking of going down this route ourselves.
