In a nutshell, is an Assistant Teacher a normal, everyday teacher that is not a Head of Department, or is it a lower paid position with less responsibility?

Thanks!!!

Hey James, sounds like the equivalent of what we call a TA (teacher's assistant) at the section 21 school here in kzn. They assist the class teacher particularly where numbers in the class are high, and are usually on a 3/5ths or 4/5ths salary.
But those who can really help are all asleep at the moment!

An assistant teacher is a 'normal teacher'... it's the same terminology as in the UK... bizarre really

I asked the exact same question a couple of years ago! Very confusing isn't it.:)

Confusing and very daunting when you are 11000km away and need to sign an acceptance letter.

My wife has the job offer and as a qualified English and Art teacher is very nervous about getting to NZ and being stuck in a very junior position and not being able to get out for at least 6 months.

FWIW - this forum is absolutely fantastic, and I really appreciate the rapid responses and answers! Thanks a million!
