Hi,

I've managed to set myself a bank account up before I head off to NZ next month, BNZ.

I'm now looking to set up a credit card too, I'm ideally looking for one which has no annual fee (that's the norm in the UK, but I can't seem to find any similar NZ cards), or at least has cash back offers that will cover the fee.

I'm not bothered about interest charges, as I always look to settle up monthly and I'm also not greatly bothered about the reward schemes - I've got stack loads of Nectar points in the UK, but none of the offers are that great and they are usually very inflexible.

The BNZ credit cards all seem to have fees, and reward points. Can anyone recommend a good NZ credit card, preferably one I can apply for before I head off down under.

Regards

You could check out Credit Cards (http://www.interest.co.nz/creditcards.asp) for options.

Seems to be a few listed without any fees.

We currently use ASB card with true rewards which accumulates dollars that can be used a bit like nectar, does come with its own 'credit card' which can be used at some shops exactly like a normal credit card (much better than playing around with vouchers).

Because we did our mortgage through our bank we have their credit card so no fee, no fee for bank account either or mortgage set up & solicitor fees refunded
I don't know too much about the whole banking system & left it all too late so this may be the wrong way of doing it but it's worked for us & is OK for the time being until we get settled enough to woryy about this sort of thing

The rewards thingy doesn't bother me either so I went for a KiwiBank Mastercard Zero. This has no fees as long as you purchase something every three months to avoid their 'inactivity fee' :raebanana www.kiwibank.co.nz

Their interest rate is 15.90% if you don't pay off every month and I've found them very easy to deal with, especially their customer service centre.

Try haggling with your bank or any CC provider though, they may want to keep your business ;)

We have an ASB credit card. Although we pay an annual fee, we've paid that back into the account with 'cash back' about 4 times over in the last 6 months.

They don't advertise it as cash back, but you can pay your 'fee' from your reward $'s, so there's nothing to stop you just paying your fee over and over again. I can't be checking, but I'd say we've had over $150 back on the card already.

Yes we do spend a lot on the card :p but we pay it off each month, so we're allowed to.
