Haven't read about the changes coming in to force but I would just get your OH to take the theory test that way he won't have to worry about it :)

Hi Sharon,
I cannot find your initial question but Mark and I went to AA and provided our drivers licences, proof of address and little bit money for the exam. We just sat and took the exam (35 easy questions) and because they are exactly like the scratchies at the petrol stations. You find out there and then if you have passed. And they gave us temporary licences, Last week Mark received his full driver's licence.
It is different for me as I had Turkish International licence, but I'll take my practical and get licence in 10 days too :)

He has tried already and failed, he got totally frustrated as he has been driving for best part of 25yrs and feels that people over here drive like lunatics and ranted on and on............ Just thought i would make a discreet query on his behalf!!

http://www.parliament.nz/en-NZ/SC/BusIndex/0/c/6/00DBHOH_BSC_SCALL_1-Bills-before-select-committees.htm
the bit at the bottom says
Land Transport (Driver Licensing) Amendment Bill (submissions not called, 30 June 2008)

You could always pop over to Australia for a few days. As soon as you come back, the 12 months starts again. ( Probably easier and cheaper to do the test)

Hi Sharon,
Hubby and I have just done the theory test and found the following site (possibly it's been mentioned on ENZ before ?) to be extremely helpful for practice:
http://www.communitylaw.org.nz/licence/test.php?q=dHlwZT0nR2VuZXJhbCBxdWVzdGlvbnMnIE9SIHR 5cGU9J0xpZ2h0IHZlaGljbGUgcXVlc3Rpb25zJw==&lclass=Classes+L1+and+Class+1+(light%20vehicles)&questions=General+questions+and+Light+vehicle+ques tions
If you do bunches of these 'scratch' tests to practice (you can choose either the quick test with 10 questions or the full test with 33), you're bound to have seen all the actual questions you could possibly get on the actual test.
If you want to be sure you've seen them all, check out the Land Transport site. Here you will find the general questions:
http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/roadcode/theory-test-questions/general-questions.html
and here the specialist questions for car drivers:
http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/roadcode/theory-test-questions/specialist-questions-cars.html
Unfortunately the Land Transport site doesn't give you the answers directly, which is why we found the first site so useful for practice.
With this tool in hand we breezed through the theory test (both with full marks !) and are now proud owners of a Kiwi licence :clap ! Hope you and your hubby find it useful as well...
Cheers,
Silver

What happens if you fail the theory? Do you just get to keep your UK one & keep trying? I wouldn't mind having a bash if I thought I could take it over & over or is it exoensive?
Sorry not really looked into it or thougtht too much about it as yet

The test costs $79.
As your UK one is valid for 12 months then I guess you can continue driving on that license while you re-take the theory test.

I'm not sure that the link posted is actually for the 'theory test' that you are interested in? There are currently several amendments going through for this Bill so it may be refering to a different amendment?
From what I can tell, you are actually looking for rule 10003, see Rules in Progress (http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/rules/progress.html) for details on progress.
Note that the original rule 10003 has been split where the first part is now in force. The second part (I believe this to include the theory test) is currently at the White phase - awaiting for submission to minister.
And from About rules (http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/rules/about-rules.html) that after it is submitted, it will take at least another 28 days before it becomes law.
Not sure that any of this actually helps, just that there is still a possibility that this will all be law in April, but please don't rely on this.

Yep me too Sharon have to get theory sorted then see if they'll wave the 6 months waiting period till you can sit the practical - anyone had any success at this?? Apparently you can ask Ministry of Land & Transport to wave or shorten the time period between tests but just wondered if anyone had done this??
Cheers

Congratulations to your hubby Sharon, well done :clap :raebanana! It must be a relief to have it out of the way at last.
And good luck to you (and Karen too of course !) on gaining the much coveted license. Let us know how you get on ?

After I passed the theory, I wasn't allowed to drive on my own until I did the practical, if you're converting from an overseas license there is no waiting period. I waited til I had a couple of weeks off work as you need to do the theory before the practical and I wasn't allowed to drive myself to work in the period between the 2 tests.

Hello Sharon,
I have taken my practical test last Monday ( and passed), as long as you are a sensible driver there is no problem and as a driver who drove a car on the other side of the road for many years it wasn't that hard.
1st step is your driving they check if you stop at the STOP signs, giving signals (ALWAYS 3 SECONDS), check the mirrors and that is done.
2nd part is watching the road while driving, they tell you during driving to start watching and 2 seconds later they tell you to stop and tell them what you have seen (hazards or possible ones)
3rd one is they take you high speed zone and let you drive (80km/hr) that is all.
And one more note you can drive 5km faster that speed limit if needed but don't drive so slow

Thanks for this - just if anyone can clarify for me... I've got a provisional UK license and after asking at local AA my understanding is that I'd sit theory test here then have to wait 6 months to sit practical test. They did say that I could apply for the waiting period to be shortened or removed and as that's what I'd like to do has anyone had any success with this? I know I wish I'd sat test before left UK but you live and learn :yes

I was "told" that if you fail the theory then you are NO LONGER allowed to drive on your UK license until you pass. How much truth there is in that i do not know (it was however a LTNZ employee?) and how the hell an officer who stops you will know you took a theory last week and failed is beyond me?

Found this thread very helpful, but have a few questions. We arrived in NZ on 14th June 07, so will need to take the theory test.
How much is the test and does anyone know the pass rate, as looking at the questions, I would be surprised if I get full marks...
Can anyone help??
Thanks

The test costs $79.
There are 35 questions and I think you need to get 32 correct.
You can review the road code here (http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/roadcode/)
You can try the same test at the following link Online Driving Test (http://www.communitylaw.org.nz/licence/learn.php)

Make an appointment at an AA office
Also if it's a fairly big city (ie Auckland), you might be able to turn up and do the theory test only straight away but best check with them first.
I just stopped by at the AA on Albert St in Central Auckland a few days before to pick up the forms and fill them out at home and the lady at the counter just said heaps of people turn up on the day for the test without an appointment, and they're ok with it :yes

I've just checked on the status of this amendment and it would appear that it has now been submitted to the minister and the rules have been signed.
It would appear that it went through unchanged so the details of the rule change can be found here:- http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/consultation/omnibus-amendment-2007/draft-omnibus-amendment-rule-2007.html
Not sure how much longer left before it becomes law, would expect at least 28 days as it first needs to be tabled in parliament. From previous changes it has taken between 28 days and 6 months.
