Mrs Granite here!

Would someone be brutally honest with me please? Mr Granite and I are submitted our EOI on 28 Nov 07. Both of us have degrees, diplomas, and certificates: my degree's not relevant to current job (20+ years experience) and Mr Granite has landed the job of his dreams here in Scotland. (He's happy enough to give this up for the same in NZ of course!!!)

Neither of our current jobs appear on the skills shortage list as such, tho Mr Granite is in Environmental Monitoring.

In all honesty, with 135 points and no job offers as yet (chicken and egg situation, you know what its like), what are our chances of getting in without a job offer? We're aiming for PR before we come out. Mr G would like to get a similar position before we come out too... preferably nr Christchurch....

I really need a virtual 'hug' today. It seems like it's taking forever....

I can't help with advice, but can send you a virtual hug!
I am having a 'we'll never get there' day today, it's all the initial expense thwarting our plans.
Can't decide whether to sell our house and just go for it, or save up for all medicals etc (which would take us years!!)

Hug coming your way.:)

If it helps I was selected with 120 points last....October? I forget :o No skill shortage points or anything. It's quite possible to be selected, but it seems that the selection criteria is much stricter in the very late and early part of the year.

Don't loose hope, you are both qualified proffesionals who would be an asset to the country. Just a case of waiting for your number to come up!

Best of luck for a speedy draw! :clap

Thanks folks! Feeling better already!

Patience, they say, is a virtue............ but I WANT IT NOW! :o)

It would be great if we could get Mr Granite a job. Does anyone know of any Environmental Monitoring Officer vacancies? He's currently employed by a local council to collect liquid and gas samples from their landfill sites for analysis. He loves the outdoors, and is a dedicted and hard worker.....

Me, I can work anywhere doing PA/EA/Office manager or book-keeping work. I'd really like to be doing more book-keeping work.... I know how that scares most folk! :o)

Cheers folks
:o)

I think it would be best to let your fingers tap on the mouse and get surfing. I have encountered some "like" jobs and I think that your best lead would be to surf the websites of the various city councils. Hmmm, but I think even before that you should have and idea at least what region in NZ you would wish to settle into. As for Job offers there is a bonus in the EOI application if you have a job offer outside of Auckland.

Personally, my family and I hope to settle in the Wellington Region... so decide where first, then get surfing.:raebanana

hi there
I'd recommend you give the councils a call, and the public health units of the DHBs. sometimes a phone call to the right person in the council can pay dividends. Remember that a number of jobs have been empty so long that they only periodically appear as vacancies. i'd suggest you google a list of the councils and find out the contact details for the environmental managers and just give them a call to find out whether there are any vacancies coming up in future, or any vacancies at the moment. You could start with my favourite place - new plymouth - www.newplymouthnz.com.
also worth contacting DOC (Dept of conservation).I'm pretty confident your other half would have no problems getting work here in NZ with those skills

That being said, I can't see you having too many problems getting in with 135 points - so good luck!

What a boost!

Originally we thought we wanted to stay in the Wellington area, but having had another reccie last February, we really want to be settling in the CHC area now, but we'll go wherever Mr Granite gets a job

Thanks for all the advice. I think we'll be phoning round the council's now instead of just submitting a CV on the offchance.

We hadnt checked the DOC website for a while, so that's on the list for this week too.

Cheers for that!:)

I just wanted to wish you well, and hope that everyone elses replies will give you that much needed boost. Although I am a little out of date with the application process, I am sure you will be just fine from what you have said.
