This may be a bit of a dumb question but I cannot find an answer on other threads:no .

Do kids wear school uniforms?

Thanks

Ah yes they do and from the short time we've been here there appears to be a summer and winter uniform

But in Hamilton I have been informed that they don't at primary level, is this correct?

Having spent hours looking at schools, I'm pleased to say, - they vary.
Best to look at the school website, find it from this site -(http://www.tki.org.nz/e/schools/index.php).

Some will have details and costs of uniform too, just to scare you. :uhoh

Hi ICR,
Best thing is to look at the websites of schools in the area you want and they will show what uniform is required. Our kids have Summer and Winter uniform and PE uniform too. Use this link to find schools http://www.tki.org.nz/e/schools/index.php
Also, if you search the words school uniform on the search button on the forum toolbar, it'll bring up a fair bit of info.

Hi

Most schools do, but i also know of one or two that dont!

To give you an idea of Primary School uniform -
shorts/skirt $35
polo shirt $35
Fleece $45
Trousers $35

SOme schools have blazers which i have heard cost a bomb, as well as in others you have to wear certain style shoes, but think mostly for the older children.

Our primary requires "certain style shoes" as well as the intermediate and college, :yes

It's the rural/urban divide again folks!

None of the little primaries round here in the sticks have uniforms- thank goodness. I am so not a uniform fan, especially as those summer dresses are all made of polyester these days- in this heat!

Same around here, rural country bumpkins folk like us tend not to have uniforms but the townies do. I was quite surprised initially but really like it now - what matters is the school not what they're wearing. They do have a school t-shirt for use at inter school sports days, swimsports etc which is encouraged but you don't have to wear it.

Most of the primaries round by me (Ponsonby, Auckland) don't wear uniform either. They do at Intermediate and High School level though. Other primaries (Parnell, for example) do wear a uniform.

The best thing is to check out the school you're interested in, and see what their uniform policy is, as it seems to vary enormously from school to school even in the same area.

The two schools my girls go to need uniform and yes they are expensive.

I e mailed the school before we left the uk and double checked on a few things and let them know we would be enrolling them.

We had a good reception as they knew we were coming and had the classes sorted for them beforehand.

They have to wear hats in the summer and god they look cute in them,it takes your breath away when you see the whole school in the summer in matching hats, brill.:)

All uniforms at the primary schools here in Albany too. Luckily I have found details of some second hand uniform suppliers, and I am told that most of the stuff they stock in the smallest sizes are barely worn at all....guess kids grow out of stuff very quickly. I shall definitely be looking if it will save me money as dd will only be in school here for year to 18 months before we move again.

Will he be 5 or 6? You know you can hold out until he's ready or reaches 6 and he can carry on at kindie.....

Our roll has dropped to 48, but this is only temporary. We offset the less good aspects of the small school (sport teams etc) by teaming with other small primaries. I'm totally converted to the small school ethos, but 160 is pretty small by UK standards :nice1 I wonder if 48 would be shut down?

Can you add Devonport to your 'sticks' list. :D None of our primaries have uniforms and my son can wear whatever he likes on his feet (sometimes nothing). Apparently they have a vote every couple of years and so far the vote has always come out in favour of 'no uniform'. Like thezorbster they do have a school top for if kids are representing the school.

The intermediate and secondary schools do have uniforms.

As has been suggested, if you know the area you are looking at, check out the schools individual websites. :nice1

Cheers

Yes, we have that too- school tracksuits, hockey shirts, netball tops and skirts etc that get dished out for interschool matches etc.

He will be 5, I know we can hold him back till next year january but he already very keen to start which will be great help to us because there will be no more driving 15mins there and 15mins back every time I take or fetch him from kindy with two youngest on tow. His new school will be just 10mins by school bus, picking him up and drop him off outside our gate :nice1 till next child starting kindy (depend on how long waiting list is as getting really bad at moment, currently enter into kindy is 3years 11months :uhoh )

Most of the primary schools in Cambridge are uniform-free (hurrah!) except the Catholic school and the private one. The middle school has a uniform - tartan skirt and blue polo shirt winter and summer the same, and the high school has a uniform.

Same situation here. Daughter due to start school in April and she desparately needs it....she has fun at kindy, but she gets bored as the mental stimulation not enough anymore. Plus school round the corner so no more dragging other 2 out in car twice a day to drop off and collect. Wating list for brother kindy place currently 3 year 8 months :( .

Yes, everyone around here has uniforms and I am really annoyed at the price. None of that 'stocking up at Tesco's' at the beginning of the year, and buying four shirts for £1.50 (well, not quite, but you know what I mean). The only thing we had to get at the school in London was a sweatshirt, everything else was generic.

Here, we need to get everything from the school (except shoes, they don't have to wear any at school, only for the way there and home).

I'm also worrying that there is no variation possible, there is ONE type of trousers for the boys (no short or long, these are 3/4 length), and ONE type of uniform of the girls. In London, the girls could have worn a dress, or a skirt, or trousers, etc. Since we have identical twin girls, this now means we can't really dress them differently, and have to come up with something else (tattoo on forehead has been suggsted, or dramatically different haircuts, not sure what they think, though).

All in all, I find it much more expensive than in the UK (this is for primary school, no experience with secondary here or in the UK).
