Hi All,

What type accomodation did you use whilst on your recci trip (Auckland)
ie: hotels, B&B's, backpackers etc and would you reccomend any accomodation...

We will be coming over at the end of May and need to get a few ideas.

Thanks

Jeremy

I stayed in holiday homes found on sites like these

http://www.holidayhouses.co.nz/

or

http://www.bookabach.co.nz/

If you plan to stay for a couple of weeks, then you can usually negotiate a better rate. Same for motels which can be found all over NZ but I found them to be too claustrophobic and not very personal.

Try doing some couchsurfing... I did it and made some friends while getting free accommodation. http://www.couchsurfing.com

we did half camper van and half renting a holiday home (think we used that site mentioned further up). Both were excellent.

We used backpackers (BBH) and youth hostels (YHA) but always booked ahead for a double room and ensuite!!

We really enjoyed the experience but apart from a couple of backpacker places we met very few kiwis as most people were travellers from all corners of the world.

We hired an MPV and travelled round North Island,(Auckland, Rotorua, Napier and Wellington) staying in motels, all of which were clean and tidy and as they are self catering you decide when and where to eat. All were very reasonable, probably on a par per night for unit as UK B&B's per person.I did all in advance over the net. Also travelling around gives you sense of some of the outer areas. We were also lucky to have friends in Christchurch who we stayed with for two weeks, but mum and sis stayed in a local motel again and as this was for a longer than usual period for motels, got a reduction in price.
Good luck with your reccie!

We had campervan but also stayed at Top 10 sites where the choice was good of independant units with everything in or just a room with beds or beds adn small kitchen. All excellent. Also, lucky enough to have friends to stay with. Depending on how long you have, WWOOF, Willing Workers On Oraganic Farms where you work for your board and lodging.
