Can anyone help us to understand which school you go to depending on your age. We have 2 boys aged 8 and 11. Does anyone know the age ranges for Primary, Intermediate and College.
Have looked but struggling and guessed someone on the forum would be able to help.
Thanks

Hi D&J,
This is a puzzle to me. I asked this question a while ago and formites were very helpful and found out the rules. This led me to think my eldest would be in yr 8. Then a friend who is a kiwi, and whose daughter had been in my sons class in the UK, said no, he'll be in yr 9!!! :confused: The daughter had been in yr 9 in NZ and when she returned, she went back into our sons year 8!!!!
NZ cut of point is May, not Sept and I think there is some flexibility as to year in NZ more than UK, so we will just see when we get there. Does make it more complicated though as we are between year 8 and 9 ie between 'junior' or 'college' school.
Junior school is year 1 - 8 then college years 9 - 13
I think I will probably confused you more, but I hope it helps.

Dependig on when the childs birthday falls - the intermediate my son has just moved to caters for the 10-13 year olds although its only 2 years of schooling. He started year 7 this february and he was 10 - hes 11 at the end of march. When he finishes he will be 12 so will start high school for a month or so being 12.
My daughter turned 9 at the end of January and is in year 5.
Hope this helps a bit.

Not sure it helps much but officially:-
In New Zealand, compulsory education begins customarily on each child’s fifth birthday whenshe/he enters a “new entrants” class. After that class, time spent in which varies considerably, pupils usually spend one calendar year (January to December) at each of year levels 1 to 13, typically turning 6 during year 1 and 18 during year 13.
So if your boys were turning 9 and 12 this year then if they were in NZ then they would currently be in years 4 and 7 respectively.
But as others have already pointed out, for some reason the schools seem to be putting children in a year higher than expected so would most likely be in years 5 and 8 respectively.

Hi,
Thanks for that just what we were looking for. One of the reasons we ask is we are trying to establish which schools are the best in the Tauranga area, which is where we intend to hopefully move. We have also found the following information which may be useful to anybody else wondering about school ages
Sectors of schooling
The New Zealand education system is broadly divided into the following categories:
• Early childhood (preschool and kindergarten);
• Primary school starting at age five (year 1 to 6);
• Intermediate school starting at age 11 (years 7 to 8);
• Secondary school starting around age 13 (years 9 to 13) and finishing at age 17 or 18;
• Tertiary or vocational higher education.

Thanks again for all your help!:nice1
