In this muggy weather I thought I'd share my limited experience on dealing with humidity and maybe others might have some tips too? :)

1) The dehumidifier we bought is great but I wished we'd got one with wheels on as I'm always moving it from room to room and its bl**dy heavy! If it had wheels I could just whiz it around on those wooden floors (although my 18month old would probably 'help' too.). I think maybe for a large 3 bed house two dehumidifiers might have been a good idea?

2) You shouldn't run a dehumidifier while the shower/bath is on, but I've found if I run it in the bathroom afterwards (door closed), it cuts down on a lot of the humidity hanging around the house.

3) I run it in the kids room for about half an hour before they go to bed, once again the door and windows must be shut.

4) In winter, dehumidifying a room will increase the efficiency of your heating.

5) And in case I haven't mentioned it before don't bother running a dehumidifier if you've got windows and doors open. :p

Someone rang up trying to sell us one of those 'moisture masters', it sounds good but I'm not sure if we'd ever put it on as we'd be concerned about the cost!

Cheers

Tia, apparently the DVS/HRV/Moisture masters work a treat and they dont cost that much to run either, my friends power bills have hardly shifted since she put hers in.

We would get one ourselves, but we dont plan on staying in this house much longer, so buying a 2nd dehummy for winter this year.

In this warmth I basically have every door and window open.... which is fine if its not raining...

Harking back to a former thread - if you de-humidify what excuse can you then give for being in a foul mood?

Some of the DVS systems we have been looking at cost less than 5c a day to run. But they do cost more to run if you have the optional extra bits to the systems, but even then the running costs are supposed to be way less than running even a single dehumidifyer, and you get your money back in aprox 5 years of initial outlay.

I wrote a reply to this earlier, it was incredibly intelligent and witty, but you'll have to take my word for it, as its disappeared. :(

So I'll just ask if anyone on the forum has got a DVS type thing?

Cheers

We have a DVS system but to be honest we've only been in our house a few weeks & although I've got information through on it I still don't know anything about it. Saying that in the hot weather it has kept the house cool, may be able to say more in a few months time

Interesting indeed. It's been a little muggy here the past few days but most the time the climate in Hawkes Bay is a very dry heat, which is why I think people move here from Auckland and find 30 degrees more pleasant than 25 in humid Auckland.

How much do these DVS systems cost? I understand that HRV systems also cost less, but without having sales persons out to provide quotes, I have no ball park figure. Just pondering the arrival of winter (and condensaton) and doing some advance planning.

Another suggestion for dealing with humidity......wander around naked :D
My kids think that is a great idea today :laugh
