Hi,
I am trying to hire a cleaning person in Wellington and the only one I have found wants $30 an hour. This seems a bit steep( more than we would pay in Denver, Colorado) but I am suffering from a herniated disc and my partner's definition of cleaning leaves something to be desired in my book- so I don't have much option but to find someone. Any experience with cleaning people's hourly rate in Wellington or Auckland/ Christchurch? Any suggestions if you are using a cleaning person in Wellington?
Thanks,
Wendy

$30!
I'd say $15-$20 is more the norm dependent on age/experience/what they do eg: some might help with ironing as well.

Well mine is $15 an hour. And I don't have a herniated disc as an excuse, but I reckon it's a relationship saver!

I'm also looking for a cleaner - just for a little while in Auckland so I'm curious about prices. I've seen adds up at the grocery store for $15/hour. But I'd really like to go with someone who's personally recommended. I'd also rather go with an individual than one of those cleaning companies. If anyone happens to know anyone in the Howick area, please PM me.
How many hours per week is reasonable for a small 3 bed, 1 bath house?
I'm also looking for some help with the gardens - again, please PM if you know someone.

We pay $140 per fortnight for the whole house, and the cleaner stays until it's done, usually about 3-4 hours. Our last cleaner, who is no longer in the market, charged $60 per week for approx. 2 hours (just over). They both visit(ed) once per timeframe.
That's for a 5 bed, 4 bathroom house.
Howie, I've PM'd you,
Gil

Being the the 'clean freak' I am, I'm starting to think I'm in the wrong business :p
Joking aside, it was something I did consider when we first moved here. There always seems to be someone needing just a wee bit of help around the house.

How many hours per week is reasonable for a small 3 bed, 1 bath house? My mother has a cleaner who goes all through her 2-bedroom 1 bathroom flat, including washing the kitchen floor each week, in two hours. I would think 3 hours would be reasonable for what you want - an extra hour for another bedroom and the stairs.

That is what my mother does too. She gets the cleaner lady everyweek. not that they are filthy or something, but for many years we were all instructed to clean and tidy the rooms a day before the cleaner lady.
But cleaning works are different in Turkey, cleaner lady comes to your house in the morning about 8-9 the time for breakfast. having a tea before work. Than she would dust every where vacumclean the carpets and floor. Then wash the floor with soapy water and again same for the carpets.
Bathroom and the toilets, then windows. If she has time left the beds would be moved to clean under, and ironing ect. But that means she would be staying at least till 4-4:30. And if I remember right my mother was paying her 35 liras (about $35)
I wish I could find a deal like that

I pay mine $16 an hour - she does everything, including the ironing and periodically does things like clean the oven, wash down the skirting boards and along the top of door frames. (All things that would escape my notice...)

I pay mine $15/hr, she does 2 hours a week (ironing not included, I like doing that myself). I am like you Moorf, I clean up before she comes too :laugh

I am sooo jealous! When my mum visits, she sits on her backside and drops hints for cuppas all day long :roll
I have given up worrying about the state of our place....the kids make mess faster than I can clean up these days. As long as the washing gets done and the kitchen is hygenic, I can live with the rest. While I entertain the kids, OH does the hoovering and bathrooms at the weekend and some dusting occasionally when he remembers.
Would LOVE a cleaner (we had one for 10 hours per week when I was growing up....my dad was not domesticated) but we can't afford it.

I'd do anything right now to have a cleaner, especially after starting work. But then again I'm like Moorf and would clean before they arrived :D

From my personal experience, as you get older, you generally worry less and less about things like cleaning. There are better ways to spend ones time, which after all is limited. I can fully appreciate why some of you would want cleaners, but I am shocked by the prices some of you have been quoted i.e. $35 per hour! Do people actually pay that much money, or are those prices taking the michael after hearing your British accent?

The cleaners I used to have were all Brits and the others are on here: http://www.viphomeservices.co.nz/

PS Really can't get my head around cleaning before they come!! Or me... blow that!
But I agree with Oldest about the prices. I was surfing the other day to see what people charge for individual lessons over there, and rates seem to vary between $20 and $40, depending on qualifications and/or experience of the tutor. So would you really expect to pay the person who washes your floor as much or more than someone who e.g. can help you cope in conversational Japanese, or teach your child to play the violin? Apparently some people do.

I guess it all boils down to the value you attach to an activity...

Yes, you're right of course. Over here I've always been aware of a kind of roughly established differential, which seems not to be happening in some NZ areas anyway. I'm guessing there must be very few cleaners around where people are paying these high rates?

Hi all,
We pay $ 20/hr for an experienced, whirlwind (really, no joke !) cleaner and she comes once every three weeks for three hours. In that time she dusts, vacuums and wet cleans our four bedroom, one office, 2 1/2 bathroom house. The only thing she doesn't do is windows, but we don't do that very often and hubby has gotten to be pretty good at that, bless him :clap !
Most importantly, she cleans pretty much to my analy retentive :o standards, which I find amazing and for which I am very grateful. This is very important to me because otherwise, knowing me, I'd probably be doing it all again once she'd gone and there would really be no point.
In between we keeep the house as clean and tidy as possible, but I'm physically unable to do heavy work (i.e.; vacuum cleaning and such). Not having children we manage to keep things pretty tidy and she complains sometimes that she's embarrassed to clean for us because the house is already so clean :laugh !
And yes, we too tidy up before she comes, just to make her job a bit easier and to save her time for more important cleaning tasks. Admittedly, I also tend to check the toilets before she comes, just to make sure they're not too grubby to look at ;), but luckily they never are ...
Cheers,
Silver

with three kids here (eldest joining us on Monday, yay!) and a dog I could really do with a daily housekeeper! I'm very tidy-minded and strict about the kids using their their own bedrooms or their study to keep all mess out of the living areas and on the whole, they're pretty good :yes
I do try and do an in-between week quick clean and they do help with it.
Gil
PS Off topic thanks, Nic!

Thats a bit outrageous, for that you would get my wife AND me as we charge a little under that for both of us combined! Shop around, the norm is nearer to $15.
