Well am now minus the tooth and 230 bucks -aarrggh!! I am now fuming at my UK dentist :( Apparently I have gum disease which has been going on for years and if had been treated in the UK I wouldn't have to have lost the tooth and potentially others!!!! I now have to go to a specialist in Christchurch to try and rectify some of the damage - am going to have to sell my soul to pay for it!! I had regular check-ups and paid for them in the UK but this wasn't mentioned until I was leaving... Am sooo angry feel like phoning UK dentist and giving him a right mouthful (pardon the pun)..
Off to take more painkillers and sulk :(

Awww... this must be maddening. We some time with a don't-care dentist who would vaguely wave a probe at your mouth and say, 'That's fine,' and take the money every six months. He did try suggesting I should have all my old fillings removed and replaced, but gave up on that when I laughed and said, 'When I win the lottery.' When we went to a different practice, it turned out I'd been lucky and really WAS okay, but M had all kinds of things that should've been taken care of sooner - he was back and forth to the surgery every week for months. Some of these people OUGHT to be reported.

Well went to see specialist today and not good news :( Apparently I have extreme case of gum disease and have had for many, many years and it's got way worse cos hasn't been treated - am soooo angry at UK dentist!! I've got to get loads of work done, it's going to cost an absolute fortune and to top it all no guarantee that I'll keep all my teeth
One good thing is that they'll let me sort out a payment plan so at least I don't have to find thousands of dollars right away but still.....
Off to search out how to complain about UK dentist and fume :wah
Sorry for rant...

That's just normal for what your having done, not belittling it at all, your so brave & want to wish you luck but better to be out of it, I had a tooth pulled before we left & not something I would go through awake again, just a pain that in the UK I could get the gap fixed for free as I'd have a year free under maternity but not here so god knows how much it's going to cost me

Ooh Jade feel your pain :(
I've got to go to the dentist to get my 3 wisdom teeth out and am putting off making the appointment.. Partly cos I've still got to pay off the periodontologist bill but also fear - no-one mentioned sedation to me and think I have to just have a local!?!
Good luck

You'll be fine i'm in the trade and that's standard advice for sedation. You wont remember a thing about the procedure and will probably sleep an hour or two after it. You'll be fine the next day and back to normal.
Don't worry about it and when i'm working in Hawke's bay - hopefully in the next year or two - i'll look after you :D
Right sympathy over it's lecture time - remember it's a preventable disease and a stitch in time definately saves nine in dentistry. Get checked out at least once a year hopefully these things can be nipped in the bud.
Good luck

I'm in the "middle" of a root canal at the moment - I've had to put the second bit off until I save up.
:wah
I cant say it was a pleasant experience - but the endowhatshername in Welly (Deborah Creah) was AMAZING. She was so calm and patient with me - I actually asked for more anaesthetic - which I am mortally scared of.
She assured me the worst bit is over.
But I thought to myself - haha - you haven't got the Visa bill to come luv! By FAR the worst bit!

I have to say it is sound advice but doesn't always work out that - as I know from experience! I have always gone to the dentist twice a year without fail, cleaned twice a day etc etc. However I ended up losing two teeth, having surgery to remove a cyst from the roof of my mouth and root canal treatment in order to save the next tooth along. i am now having more problems with the gums and tooth that had root canal treatment and feeling like I should just say pull the whole lot out and give me a set of false ones!!
Sorry to have a moan of my own.
Jade hope it all goes well, will be thinking of you! :o

Ouch guys.... I'm amazed at all the dental problems my forumite friends have since arriving here! Even me...and I've always had great teeth and no work until a root canal just before I left UK which cost me about £330 if I remember rightly. Within a few months of arriving in NZ my UK root canal gave up the ghost (1yr old) and I was charged $1300 for the priviledge of having it redone.
Then, earlier this year, I was eating a fruit bun and crack - a seperate tooth cracked in half... another root canal and rebuilding.. another $1300 - I thought I'd look in to dental insurance but most of them don't seem to cover root canals!!! :roll Anyone found one that does but that doesn't cost the earth otherwise I'm going to have to consider extractions!! LOL and Jade, I'm with you on the gummy fear... altho managed to make it to 40 with no falsies lol

I never had any major problems until just before we were due to leave the Uk, and most of you know about that and have seen the photo of my beautiful yellow jaw after my operation thanks to Stevie D! I wondered if it was just the fact that I'd got to 40 and everything was downhill from there on?! :exit
When my remaining teeth (and gaps :uhoh ) are giving me grief, I sometimes wonder if it wouldn't be easier to have them all pulled and invest in a liquidizer instead :p , it would probably be cheaper in the long run!

Gosh - I really feel for you all suffering with your teeth.
I had never had any problems with mine when in the UK, never even had a filling! When I moved to NZ I had three fillings on my very first visit to the dentist, and he wanted to remove all my wisdom teeth, and suggested major surgery to realign my jaw, as I have a pronounced overbite.
I had the fillings done, but refused the other treatment, and am lucky that I don't really suffer from any problems.
I saw my UK dentist when I was back there recently (he's a family friend) and he was very impressed with the work on my fillings, and the fact that they suggested realignment surgery. Apparantly he'd never suggested it to me, as it wouldn't have been funded by the NHS as I'm not a serious enough case, and it would have cost several thousand pounds. I'm actually reconsidering it now, as it would make a huge change to the shape of my face and how my jaw sits, which may help to eradicate the horrific headaches I suffer from. I think UK dentists often refrain from informing patients of work that may need doing in the future, on the chance that they can actually get away without doing it due to the fact they are so over stretched and under funded.
