Well, as most of you know I have had a shaky couple of weeks, re home sickness/removals la la la...well, today JUST TOPS IT ALL OFF!!!!!

Ill begin...

Friday night, feel a twinge in my left hand side of mouth...think nothing of it. Saturday eating breakfast and it decided to give me more of a hint to 'get to the dentist' by giving me a huge shooting pain...so I think to myself, I will book in the dentist next week.

So I start eating on my right side....then I go to bed Saturday night...'Throb, throb, throb'...not to be outdone, my right side now starts to compete with the left, I am now taking pain killers every 4 hours. So I am awake Sat night, pain all sunday and the same sunday night....not good, head ache and cheek ache(if that is possible) to boot!!!!

Rang dentist monday...can get me in tuesday...so I have been today...get there and fear of dentists takes over....I am now shaking like a leaf and crying!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dentist is lovely, 2 xrays later and this was the verdict.....

Left side....thinks she can save the tooth (thinks she can save the tooth!!!!!!!!!), needs a filling:no

Right side.....nerve damage and an abcess ( excuse the spelling...not in the mood to check correct spelling at the minute!!!!!)...

VERDICT: My dentist recommends that I have route canal surgery...she can do it however it is likely to take 3 days and she cannot guarantee the success of it. She recommends I see a endiodentist ( spelling?) who specialises in RC surgery...slight hitch...he is in Wellington, there are none in Hawkes Bay and the starting costs are approximately $900.00.She says because I am so nervous she thinks I am best going to someone who can do it quicker and has more chance of making it work. The other alternative was to have it out, but she feels I would need sedating:wah as I am so nervous, and this would be a horrendous cost also. She did say other options, one of which involved having a false tooth that I take out every night and brush, which is not my favourite option at 27! Can't remember what else she said as I was in such a state!

To conclude: I am now sat here with tooth ache both sides having swallowed beans for tea. I am sad, cross and in pain, pain, pain:wah I am on anti-biotics for the abcess so hopefully that will take some pain away. I am booked in for left side filling on Thursday:wah and I am waiting for a quote back from welly guy once he has seen my xray.....I spoke to dentist receptionist this afternoon and asked her to email me my options, as I can't remember what the dentist said properly!

After all this, I went to work for the afternoon!

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...i'll sleep tonight -NOT

I feel better now I have had a rant

Oh I feeling so sorry for you, what a nightmare you've had :no

I have a terrible phobia for dentists as well and know I've got to have a tooth filled but just don't want to go. Same as you get the shakes and start sweating. Really have to be sedated before I get in the chair !!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, the cost of health treatment in NZ is a bit of a shock when coming from UK, don't like the sound of 3 days for root canal work. Hope the pain starts to subside soon

Love, I really feel for you. HUGE HUGS!

I've had root canal before and I'm also very nervous at the dentist. Last time I went, she had to keep pausing to ask me to release my grip on the arm rest cause my fingers were white.

TBH if she thinks you'd need to be 'knocked out' for an extraction, I can't think why they wouldn't suggest that for the root canal. IMHO I think an extraction is relatively quick and is nothing compared to root canal surgery.

Sod the tooth I say. Get it yanked out and save yourself a couple of thousand $$$$.

Thanks for hugs xx

The problem is I had a 'whip it out' kind of dentist in the UK ( teeth I mean)...gosh that sounds a bit rude!

And so I have had one tooth taken out, same side at the bottom, which has just left me 2 teeth at the bottom right side to chew...if I get it whipped out I will only have one!!!!!!!

I am torn...pain and cost a fortune or...mushed food!

I went through a root canal a couple of weeks ago - my 2nd in New Zealand.

I have NEVER met so many people who have had root canals in my entire life - is it a standard procedure here  (an expensive one at that - I paid c. $1200 each time).

What I would say, Holland, is that the treatment I've had here has been far superior to that in the U.K that I had experienced and the dentists far more considerate.

Each time I've had root canal here they've done it over a period of 2-3 weeks to allow the tooth / gum to calm down between procedures. It's not painful (I always request max pain relief injections) but the sensations aren't nice - however, they do say it's better to try and save a tooth than have it removed - because you're effectively removing 2 teeth if it's a molar as the opposite tooth can no longer fully function.

Anyway, hope all goes well, just don't delay the treatment - it might "feel" better with painkillers but believe me, it'll come to back to haunt you...

That's exactly what I was thinking.

I hate (read:I'm petrified of) the dentist, but having an extraction is nowhere near as bad as a root canal - trust me - I've had both.

The root canal was a failure and I ended up having to have the tooth out, PLUS the next one to it 'cos I developed an abscess too.

Yes, I admit it - I have a small denture, but no pain.....:nice1

Huge hugs Jade and I hope the painkillers give you some relief.

Forgot to say......

If I was going to be spending $$$$$ on a root canal, I want a heck of a lot more assurance than "might be able to save it".

Can you imagine spending all that money then having to spend more to get the bl**dy thing removed. It's a bu**er that you've already lost a couple though.

Well, the first one I had done in NZ was to "correct" the one I'd had in the UK - seems the dentist in the UK had "missed" a canal and an abcess had formed. That was done in NZ 3 yrs ago and I've had no problems since, the dentist commented on how well it had been done when I had xrays recently.

The second one, which was done about 3 weeks ago, was a surprise as I'd broken the tooth and was only due to have a filling until they did xrays and said i'd need root canal. Three weeks on and I'm chewing choc eclair sweets so I'd say it's been pretty successful to date.

They do say that root canals can fail, but the orthodontist should be better able to give you an opinion on that.

Keep us posted and don't forget to always question their decisions so you know what they're doing and why (I'm sure my dentist shoves things in my mouth to STOP me asking questions... :D ).

I think root canals are an age thing. Once I hit 30 and beyond I spent more time with my dentist in the UK than anyone else. I never even got to the 6 month check-up. Thank goodness it was all on the NHS. I even used to travel 125 miles back to my home town after we moved to Wales. However, such measures now we're in NZ would seem a trifle excessive!

But here we are, two months in, a broken tooth repair for me, a replaced filling for OH and now OH has to have a root canal. (Maybe it wouldbe worth the flight home!!)

Some advice from my old dentist re pain control for me. Paracetamol on its own, not quite man enough. Ibruprofen on its own, not enough but you can safely combine the two since they have different properties. Obviously respecting each preparation's maximum dosage. I suppose I ought to add that it worked for me and I am not recommending any product to anyone. You're all grown up and can make your own decisions.

Jade, I really feel for you. In my opinion there isn't much worse than toothache and on top of everything else you have had to deal with. Hang in there.

But stagger them so you get minimal pain relief gap.

If the pain is really bad you can also take coedine and diazepam at the same time as paracetamol and ibuprofen....but you won't want to do anything but sleep if you do!

There is also the option of Paracetamol then 2 hrs later Ibuprofen then 2 hours later Asprin,( so long at tummy ok) and then after 2 hrs back to the Paracetamol this ensures that max dosages per 24 hours aren't exceeded .

Hope it's better soon Jade

Don't know if this helps anyone, but a friend of mine was terrified of dentists, and it wasn't until she had a huge absess that made her look like a demented hamster she had to be forced into going. She was really nervous, shaking, cold sweats etc, but had saw a hypnotist and it really helped her.

I am sceptical about hypnosis, but then I have never tried, but it certainly made a difference to her.

Hope you feel better soon Jade,

Eldest had a root canal done last year at a cost of $2,500. Luckily as she is a minor it was paid for by the powers that be, otherwise i would have told the dentist to pull it. Take the extraction option, and keep those bucks for something more useful.

Just as a footnote. Waz some good old whisky on it for the pain whilst your waiting.

hope you are feeling better soon!! I had an absess on my tooth that ended up needing root filling and the pain was awful.:wah

Once I had antibiotics, and strong pain killers (dentist prescribed) it was a lot better, and the actual root filling was a breeze, after the trouble with the gum. :roll

I am sure that it will go well for you.

So sorry to hear about your dental problems Jade, that's just awful :no !

Being totally terrified of dental procedures myself, I can certainly relate ! Had my fill with 11 crowns and a bridge (including two root canals !), all done in the space of 1 1/2 years, and with a dentist I wasn't at all comfortable with  !

Must admit though, I did get used to it (to a certain degree) after a while of going to the dentist every so many weeks. Holding a soft plush toy in my hands helped to calm me and stop me from cramping and squeezing my hands till they bled !

Also wanted to say that the last time I had a tooth pulled, I was told to only use Paracetamol rather than Ibuprofen (my preferred pain relief), since apparently Ibuprofen can cause excessive bleeding ? Might be worth checking out with the dentist...

I have the two back molars missing, on the left bottom side of my mouth, and a bridge covering the front two. It's been that way for a couple of years now, but surprisingly enough, doesn't bother me with eating/chewing at all (don't even notice it anymore).

I have been told though, that it can have an adverse effect on the molars above the removed ones, but I just couldn't stomach the invasive implantation procedures necessary to replace the two missing molars (or the cost for that matter !) at the time.

Anyway, not sure if any of this is helpful at all :o, but the very best of luck and I hope you feel better very soon.

Hi,

As an ex dental nurse I would always always try to save the tooth. Once you start loosing teeth your gum and jaw bones start to recede and in many cases make you look older than you really are, especially if front teeth are missing. This is also if you have dentures the gums still receeds hence people need to keep having dentures tightened/refitted etc.

Adults have 32 teeth including wisdom teeth. Many have those taken out if there isn't enough room, like me. After you 4th incisor (going off memeory) you generally have 3 molars top and bottom (not including wisdom teeth).

I unfortunately had to have a tooth (molar) removed after root canal but that was mainly caused through pregnancy as your calcium levels drop like a stone. Thats why pregnant women get free treatment on the NHS.

I agree with hypnotherapy it can work very well.

Good luck

Hi Jade

Sorry to hear about your toothache- it's horrible. I've had problems getting a dentist in the Uk and ended up going to a second dentist as the first was supposed to be NHS but recommeneded really expensive treatment. The second one had a totally different approach and suggested different teeth needed filling (and charged me 1/3rd of what the first wanted). Is it worth trying someone different? It's a lot of money so getting another 'quote' might help.

good luck.

Oh Jade poor you - I can toatlly empathise with your troubles. Before we came over i was having loads of problems, my teeth felt spongey, had abcesses, had one tooth removed becasue the root had disappeared due to the abcess, then another, and ended up going into hospital to have a huge cyst removed from the roof of my mouth, so on one side i have a back molar, then two gaps, so no chewing on that side at all!! The next tooth along is dead and the dentist in the uk recommeded i had root canel on it, but couldn't do it till my mouth healed from the op, by that time we had moved over so I had to find a new dentist here and go through all my history (up to this point i had very little dental work done, a few fillings but always regular check ups - I was gutted!!) I found a really nice dentist here, hes south african, very gentley spoken and really puts you at your ease, my root canel stuff was done over 3 session over about 6 weeks, cost approx $800, i would check out prices with other dentists if I were you they do seem to vary. Just after my mum and dad arrived I ended up breaking part of a tooth on the opposite side - so no chewing at all going on then!! Luckily I got in the next day and he did a repair for me but doesn't know how long it will last - may need a crown eventually!!

Its a hard decision to make whether to pull or repair, if the repair doesn't work you feel like its money wasted, but once the tooth is gone its VERY expensive to fill the gap (I was going to get implants in my gaps, but can't bare to part with the money! Nobody can see them being at the back - just get jaw ache sometimes from only chewing on one side!)

Anyway I do understand this bit of what you are going through, but ontop of everything else you must be feeling pretty naffed off and low. Keep your chin up girl - your run of bad luck has to end soon, think you've had seven years worth in the space of a couple of months - how many mirrors did you break??!!

Sending you lots of hugs.

I had sedation in the Uk as i am like you, very nervous of the dentist.

I paid something like £45 and found it great. It was a few years back now, but i remember getting myself totally worked up over the whole thing!

I had like a needle in my arm from memory and although was 'awake' through the whole thing, i felt very calm and very at ease. I remember sitting in the chair worrying as they had sedated me and i thought i would feel drowsy and go to sleep, but it was great!

It was a bit odd later, felt very spaced out and felt like i was floating out of the dentists............but felt really good about the whole experience. Just remember going to bed for rest of day and waking up feeling like i had a huge hangover........I would definetly do it again if i had the choice, but thats in my honest opinion.

Hope it all works out for you. There is no bigger baby than me as regards the dentist.

Come on now you all know the solution.

It's simple, it solves most problems, you can do it on your own and you don't get it on prescription.

It makes you happy when all around you don't know what you are smiling about.

I bet Capatin Cook and his crew used it when they had toothache, follow the example of the previous early arrivals...have a drink!:cheers

Well good news. My dentist, (a lovely lady called Sharon) said she thinks it's sinusitis (sp?). So she gave me a course of antibiotics and said go back if it still bothering me. I told her I feel like ripping my gums out and she explained that your gums tend to reflect how your body is feeling. So I think my pain is flu induced.

Thank Goodness even though I don;t mind going the dentist I can think of much nicer things to do with my time.

Jade now you know your fear is needles it shouldget easier as at least you know what you are fearful of, if you know what I mean.

My teeth are killing me - just in response to the email Mum sent saying oh by the way met you dentist (in UK) and he said your x-ray showed up a bit of gum disease.... What is it? How do I make it stop? Can't get to a dentist here till Monday morning and have 2 BBQs and day out with the kids tomorrow :( Can't even drink coffee and believe me I need the caffeine to survive - aaarrgghh!!

OH came back from the dentist on Thursday clutching the receipt for the $650 he had just paid for a root canal filling. Last night (Friday) he proudly presented me with another filling which had just fallen out. :(
