Hi All,

This is my first post :uhoh, so be gentle.

My wife and I are planning on emigrating to NZ, we've been scouring the web for hours, (including this forum), for any information we can get our hands on.

We like the look of Hawkes Bay as it’s not as big as some of the other cities and seems to offer the kind of lifestyle that we’re after. (Peace and quiet with some activity when it's needed).

I’m in IT - (financial centred, consulting, systems admin, implementation, etc), my wife is currently changing her career. She has a teaching degree (primary education), but would maybe prefer a move into accounting / office based work. (or perhaps work as a teachers aide for a while).

Do any of you (Hawkes Bay residents or otherwise) know what sort of employment opportunities are available? Would it be better to initially move to a bigger centre (Wellington) and then find jobs that suit and settle in an area that we prefer.

All advice / comments / suggestions welcome.

Thanks,
Andrew

Hi Andrew

Welcome to the forum!

We live in Hastings, Hawkes Bay and we love it. The weather is nearly always glorious (not at mo though!!).

Hubby was lucky to get a job before we came over. I currently work at the local Hospital, and there are always loads of jobs available there.

There does seem to be a lots of job opportunities around the Bay but probably a lot less paid than Wellington would be, but then the house prices would be higher too.

Unsure what IT jobs would be available, as Hastings and Napier are a lt smaller than Wellington, so guess if you did come this way, you may have to travel. As regards your wife, wouldnt have thought she would have a hard time finding work.

Hawkes Bay is a gorgeous place to live, beautiful scenery, mountains, vineyards, and the weather to go with is. Perhaps someone from Wellington can give you a help with whats available down there, its about 4.5 hr drive from us, so not commutable daily! I would say there is more potential down there though!

The local paper advertises a few nights a week of all the job opportunities and there are employment websites you can look out for.

HTH, feel free to email if you wany anymoe help.

Sharon

Welcome Andrew. I'm not in Hawkes Bay but have been up there many times. It's got a lot going for it and it would be a great place to live but I would have thought you would struggle to find work in IT. The biggest 'cities' are pretty small/medium sized towns really and do not have much business activity apart from local services. Much of the region outside Napier/Hastings is farming based (and vineyards obviously). I know there's a Gen-I up in Napier but I think it is just servicing local clients (pc fix type work probably).

There is plenty of IT work in Welly in the right type of areas - the infrastructure is pretty behind the UK in many ways (certainly comparing to financial setups in London) and Intel/windows is the majority player. If this is your field you will have no problems. There also seems a fair bit of citrix, vmware work and bits of san stuff.

Cheers, Steve

Thanks for the response Steve. I haven't seen many job postings for Hawkes Bay, and the few I have, have been along the lines you mentioned. (ie. PC / field support stuff).

I had originally thought of Wellington (due to the ammount of jobs and the fact that it's not Auckland), but it seems as if the weather is not so great.

I want to relocate based on a number of factors and warm summery days with a very very mild winter is definitely one of them.

I'll keep searching, thanks again for the input.

The weather in Welly isnt that bad (not as good as HB mind) - to be honest I don't think it is much different to Auckland from local forecast/reports and whenever I've been to Auckland (only about 15 days total) it's always been cloudy. I think Auckland has milder winters though. Welly had more sunshine hours in Feb than anywhere else in NZ for example. Summer temps are typically between 22-26 and winter normally drops to around 1 degree at worst (night) but about 12-18 degrees during the day. Although the temp aren't that hot it feels hotter due to the strong sun.

The wind can be a nightmare though and it does rain a fair bit (although lots of places in NZ do and again I think Auckland has as much if not more rain than Welly).

Generally from what I've seen in 2 years here has been lots of sunshine in later summer/autumn (Jan-May), mild winter with good sunshine and wet spring/early summer (although this year hasn't been that bad).

pm me if you want any more info on the IT market

Cheers

Don't be too hasty to write Hawkes Bay off though- I've no idea about jobs in the field you're considering but the lifestyle here is Very Good Indeed.

My hubby has already replied to this post. But thought I would just chip in. There are IT jobs in Hawkes Bay. I work as a Software Developer for a small firm that produces financial packages for finance companies all over NZ and Oz.

I also know of at least one web design company in Hawkes Bay desperate for wed developers. So there are some IT jobs out there, you just need to look for them.
