The time has come.

Any suggestions surrounding shipping costs back to UK, 80'ft container with no self pack (5 bed house) door to door (back to Shropshire).

It was NZ 25k on the way here two years ago with Crown, I think that was a bit steep - though a quality job.

We used Crown, to move us internally here in NZ and that was sub-contracted by them and a much lower quality job.

Two adults, no children.

Ideas, and suggestions, but I want them to do the packing.

Many Thanks

Woop's I meant 40'ft (the bigger of the two); there you go, the lack of selenium in the soil is making me go senile :roll

No suggestions apart from, if you value your possessions

DON'T USE CONROY'S.

We used them from NZ to Oz and it was the worst decision we have ever made.

Good luck and best wishes for your journey home.

Good luck with your move! Are you excited?

Cheers

PS I know another forum has a 'Moving back to the UK' section, it deals with lots of countries so you may have to trawl through it to find NZ specific info. Google 'Moving back to the UK' if you don't know the one I mean. :D

Thanks Tia that was useful.

Colindp paid $5500 for self pack 20ft, so let's say $11000 for 40'ft so perhaps $15000, if they pack as well?

In terms of going back, it is 80% certain today, and 100% certain on Saturday subject to a few twists in the tail - we are just finalising dates and closure with our employer.

They have sucked the blood out of these two immigrant stones, so they need some new ones.

Are we excited at getting our own home back after two years of transience and uncertainty - yes.

Do we expect challenges and that the decision to go back may be a compromise - yes

Will we miss people here - yes

Will we miss being about and exploited - no

Best Regards

Rabbit.

Rabbit,

Just out of curiosity so that I and others don't make the same mistake (If you feel comfortable sharing)- in what areas do you feel you were exploited? In hindsight do you think there was any way you could have avoided that?

Thanks!

I do not think our experience is unique to NZ, the details of which have to remain confidential. Rather just a specific situation and a collection of needs, wants and expectations not being met. Employers want certain people for a reason and it is important that the expectations of both sides are open, clear and understood from the beginning.

If you are on a long term bond, in a transient state, then there is a degree of vulnerability, especially if the role changes or ceases to exist and things do inevitably change.

In our situation there was a number of issues that were keeping us transient, e.g. commit to buying a house etc and those issues were outside of our control. So we never got to the point where we felt we could make a 100% commitment to NZ.

I guess the other difference for us, was that we came here for career and lifestyle reasons, not just lifestyle.

There are other employment options here, but for the moment we have decided not to pursue them.

After two years being between the ship and the shore, the shore will be the best option for us at the moment.

We can always come back to NZ (or try somewhere else) if we want to and nothing is forever.

We are glad we came to NZ though and had the experience, and I am hoping we will appreciate things ‘in our own backyard’ more (e.g. the diversity of Europe), once we are back. At the same time, I am sure we will miss many good things about NZ too e.g. the lack of people, traffic and a short commute.

The challenge is to realise it - and in many ways that is dependent on the individual and other things falling into place.

In reality NZ is only 45% pure (nature wise) based on a local government presentation I saw a few weeks ago, and I can align with that - still not bad, but not brilliant, and every place has it's own selling point and differentiation.

Nirvana does not exist - unless you create it yourself, and the most important attributes can be just be about the people you are with e.g. family & friends (and that can be anywhere).

Just wanted to say, the stresses around leaving New Zealand have been in excess of making the decision to come here.

A couple of things that tug the heart in planning the way back:

I will share the downside emotions later and what went through our minds during the last two years - as there are two sides to every story.

These examples describe the tough times in NZ for us, based on the experience of being an immigrant.

David Gray - fantastic songs, great voice. :nice1

I use to watch the Evermore video - 'Running' and yearn for all the exciting places they were visiting:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQlRwiSLTQY

Although I suspect if I watched the video when outside of NZ I would equally yearn for those Rangitoto/NZ Beach views, at the start and end!

Good Luck with it all......

Cheers
