Not the most interesting post but... How do folks get rid of grass cuttings? We're in a rental with quite big lawn but no composter etc and the district council won't take them for recycling. So we've just been putting them out with normal rubbish but think there must be another option - that and every time we cut them lawn we need loads more binbags..
Any ideas :uhoh
Cheers

You can use thin layers as a mulch to suppress weeds on the garden areas or veggie plots - just make sure it's not laid down too thick or it won't dry out..
If you want to get rid of it, and any other green waste, you could hire a bin from a local firm - there's quite a few who do it - as there are many in the same situation in Chch and environs due to dump/pit closures and fees to dump green waste.
Round here we use Malvern Bins - we just ring them when our garden bin is full and they pick it up - bin hire is free but we pay for pickups... $40. It's a big bin.
I think there's also a Canterbury-wide firm that I've seen on the roads alot - EnvorWaste: http://www.envirowaste.co.nz/

I should also add that a fair amount of people who live rurally dump their large items of green waste (branches, prunings etc) at the side of remote roads... I would say "tut tut" but knowing how much these people earn/don't earn and the distance and costs to dump it, I don't really blame them.... I know our township council are looking for a community solution.

There seems to be quite a few round us who don't collect the clippings, just leave them on the lawn.

:yes If if it's windy or wind is forecast, or if it's very sunny, we leave ours on the lawns too. If it's wet then we use the catcher and put it on the compost or in the leaf mould bags

We use this company:
www.greenfingers.co.nz
Not local to you but gives you an idea of what they do and prices. you can skip a couple of collections also.
I think our local council also do a green bin service, I'm pretty sure I've seen their wheelie bins around.

I second just leaving them on the lawn or using as mulch on flower/vegetable beds...great organic fertilizer and break down quickly. As long as you keep up on mowing, you won't end up with grand clumps of grass that look unsightly when they lay in patches on the lawn. No need to pay someone to haul them away!
