Do opportunities exist in NZ for high schoolers to study abroad for a semester or a year? Or for families to host exhange students to come to NZ for a year during high school or college?
Fairly common for US high schoolers as well as for international students to come to US study and stay with host families...wondered if it was done in NZ. I didn't do study abroad while in high school but seems it'd be a great opportunity for the right kid.

Not sure about studying abroad, but Macleans College hosts international students with the homestay option. There are students from all over, I believe. My daughter is good friends with a German and a Japanese student doing this.
Son's Intermediate school are arranging a trip to Japan that incvolves homestay and attending school, but that is a short one, three weeks. But then they are only 12! It's done jointly with another Intermediate locally.

Same answer as Gil really, one of our friends provides rooms in her house for Japanese students to come to NZ to study. And certainly the local newspaper has adverts at certain times of the year asking for additional rooms for international students.

I'm sure I've seen this at one of the colleges I've searched through. I think it was Kapiti College.

PS. had a quick look and can't find it, but I've seen somewhere that NZ students went abroad 'cos I remember thinking that was different at the time.

Yes, AFS exchanges are a common part of the high school system in NZ. Check out AFS.org for more info.
The teenagers usually spend 12 months in another country, attending school and cultural events etc. and being hosted by 2-3 different families.
