We are in the early stages of emigrating and are looking at moving to Christchurch. Has anyone got information about specific areas to look at or more importantly to stay away from? We will be getting a car when we come out so commuting will not be an issue but probably 30 minutes drive would be good. We do not have children and would ideally like to live semi rural but not total isolation and will be renting for the first 6-12 months.

Hi and welcome to this fab forum :D
We live north of christchurch and everyone said it was a 30 minute commute but in reality it's more 45 minutes. That said we love it so far (only been here about 8 weeks) and it's a lovely town. We looked around a lot when we first arrived at various towns outside Christchurch as we have kids and had never lived in a city with them. That said Christchurch isn't hugely city like so depends on what you are after. Places south of Christchurch apparently don't have sam issues with traffic in the 'rush hour' so Leeston, Rolleston, Lincoln, Prebbleton etc might be worth looking into. North of city places like Rangiora, Woodend, Kaipoi might be worth looking at. More rural places around where we are like Ashley, Oxford and Loburn would probably be too far out if you want to stick to the 30 minute commute. Hope that helps and am sure someone else will be along to help :)

For me, to be furthur away from auckland :laugh I am not type of person would like to live in city etc..christchurch is not too big, easy to get around..and lovely city.

I live 30mins drive south of christchurch where peebles16 mentioned, my nearer town is Lincoln and Rolleston. So feel free to ask anything about this areas.
