Had a rather up and down week last week with a few sleepless nights. Our plans for our house build have gone off for consent, and the build is looming. We had always planned to stay in the house we have bought here in Cambridge, and take out a mortgage on it to fund the build - but the sums just weren't adding up. Interest rates have gone up, and the poor exchange rate has affected my income from the UK, and we just can't afford to get the mortgage we would need to build the house now.

So ... we are selling our lovely house in Cambridge already (only been in it for 8 months) and moving into a rental, so we can fund our building costs. We just wouldn't have been able to make the mortgage repayments the other way. I'm gutted though, I dread the thought of 2 moves, and being back in rental again, but there you go, better than being in debt.

Here's our house, in case any of you are looking to buy a gorgeous old villa in Cambridge!

I don't imagine that will be on the market for too long - it's gorgeous! Good luck with the sale :nice1

Sam

What a fabulous home! You live 4 blocks down from our landlords. :uhoh

I can understand the reasons for moving back into rental though. It sounds tough but just hang on to the dream goal being built down the road (I'm assuming it is!) :D

That's one of the reasons we didn't buy on arrival, we have enjoyed the freedom to move and as the rent on this place is reasonable, it's given us a chance to save like mad and form plans to build our own too (when we find the perfect spot)

Have you found anywhere to rent yet? I'm sure your house won't be on the market long either. Good luck :nice1

Don't blame you Sam - rates are awful!

Enjoy keeping the house tidy for the Open Homes! :p

What a lovely looking house Sam... not looking to buy, just being nosy! :roll

Good luck with the build and please keep us posted of your progress as you are venturing there before me! :D

Ugh, tell me about it, I'm already sick of tidying and nagging the kids, and sweeping up leaves etc etc etc

Smiler - we haven't looked for rental yet, we'll look once we've got a buyer. It could take a while, the market's really slowed down here in Cambridge. First open home this Sunday, 1 day after my Dad arrives from the UK for a month. As if I wasn't stressed out enough about that!

No jet lag allowed for Dad then. :D

I thought Cambridge had a really bouyant market, interesting to hear that its slowing down up there too.

Don't stress out too much, it's not worth it. You have the type of house that someone will fall in love with, if the kids toys are left out or there's leaves on the grass.

It's a home, not a museum or park! :nice1

No, he's going to enjoy a day at Waitomo whether he wants to or not!!

Thanks for the encouragement though Smiler, appreciated.

Gorgeous house Sam!!

We have decided to hold off buying a bigger house at the minute the way the market is. The papers advise people to hold off for 6mths or so.

Wanted something bigger, but never mind, if the next 6 mths go as fast as the last, it wont be long!

Good luck with the sale!

Sam, you gotta do what you gotta do, and at least this time round renting you have all your own stuff, which may help you feel more settled than you did in your first rental.

Hope you get a quick sale and can move on with your build....

Sam, what a gorgeous home....shame you have to sell it, I can tell you have put 'your personality and TLC' into making it so home.

Good luck with 'Dad' xx

I'm sure it'll all be worth it but I know what you mean about moving twice. We're about to pack up and will be moving to our new house at end of April. 3 house moves in one year, not good but at least this move will be to our own home and not another rental. Good luck.

You shipped some lovely furniture over when you moved!

I see how big the lot is...but how many sq metres is the house?

Very sweet space!

"Extremely close proximity to the cafes" - your estate agent certainly got the priorities right!
I can see why you don't look forward to 2 moves, but it'll be worth it! We had 3 moves in 6 months and appreciate our home all the more for it.
Good luck with the house sale!

It is a shame Sam but I'm sure it will all be better in the long run. I hope it sells quick and you find a nice rental. As Jubjub says I think it will be easier in a rental this time as your all more settled and you have all your stuff now.

Goo dluck with it all.

PS thanks for the cheese it was yummy!!!

How gutting, it's a beautiful house.

I'm sure you're looking forward to the challenges of building your own home here in NZ though :nice1 Certainly be very rewarding to build the house of your dreams :)

Even in a market that is slowing down, you shouldn't have much of a problem selling such a beautiful property.

:nice1

All the very best with it all.

Cheers for all your best wishes everyone.

Migratory birds - I can't find out how big the house is, it doesn't seem to say on my details and I'm no good at estimating measurements. It's biggish, anyway!

Here's to a quick sale! You have a beautiful home Sam. Two moves isn't something to look forward to but being in your new home certainly is. Keep your eyes on the prize.

Former co-worker swore by burying a statue of St. Joseph upside down in your front yard if you wanted your house to sell.

Don't know how I managed to miss this thread Sam! Much luck for a super speedy sale and consent- any chance of a look at your house plans? :) :)

I'm blown away by your beautiful house- I can't see that sitting on the market long :)

Just hold onto the dream- the renting, the moving, the pain of selling ... it'll all fade away when you sit on your deck and enjoy the views from your beautiful section while your kids are well out of earshot in your own bush.

We are so nearly there I daren't talk about it or mention it- the process has been stressful in the extreme- cost nearly half as much again as our first estimates, taken well over twice as long and will cost us more than twice as much as we'd planned for each month to service the mortgage ..... BUT dreams only come true if you're prepared to go 'all in' to make them happen.

Sam B

Cripes Lupin, that sounds scary, I hope ours doesn't cost anymore than they've said. When you're ready, please let us know what the hold-ups and additional costs were about.

I've got the plans, but I'll have to get J to take a photo and then upload it, can't think how else to show them on here. I'll get him on to it tomorrow.

I agree entirely with what Lupin is saying here. Our build will not be complete until November now due to unforseen things happening which will be 2 years since we bought the land .If anyone wants the boring details pm me but it will be worth it in the end and I wish you Sam,Lupin and anyone else building the very best of success. It will be worth it in the end, just ask Marie P.

Cheers Danny and Julie - there's not a snifter of interest in our house so far, the housing market has crashed, I think it could be a while until we get building.
