:wah Hi, we're in a panic because my husband's job offer is going to be withdrawn unless we can give them a start date by the end of the week. Our house still hasn't sold. We can't just rent the house and go because we need the equity from it to pay off a large loan which we can't service on NZ salary.
The housing market is really slow in our area and I can't see how we can give a start date when we don't even have anyone interested in the house.
Our family is in limbo as we're all mentally in NZ already, but are stuck here. Without the job offer, our ITA won't be valid and we've got expensive medicals booked for next week so don't know whether to cancel them, put the ITA on hold and move into rented once our house is sold while we look for another job and start again.
The house has been on the market since last summer and we were hoping to have been in NZ for a month or two by now. Just want to cry !
Any advice would be gratefully received.

Hi Sunnyb
sorry to hear your news I am in the same situation having lost 2 jobs for the same reason can your husband not go while you remain tough I know but a thought, we have tried every way possible to come up with a solution and not found it so we are sittong tight until we sell and I keep telling myself we will. I have a mental picture of my house with sold accross it
I will keep my fingers crossed! good luck

I can feel your stress. I agree with Janey, can't OH go first and start work then you can follow. Not ideal but that was something we considered but thankfully we don't need to now. Have you dropped the price of your house to help it sell? Although you are probably like us and need a set amount from the house to be able to move. Just don't give up. Keep job hunting - who knows, maybe this one was not the right one and this is just fate steering you in the right direction.

Drop the price on the house??
Are you at the top end of what a realistic asking price is for your house?
People ARE buying...but it's a great market for buyers when they can look around for the best price on a house, think about a purchase for a few days or WEEKS even, the market is so slow and negotiate with a fair amt of power on their end.
My neighbors house has been (sitting empty) on the market since last summer...as I was walking by the house last night with "For Sale" sign hanging from the third realtor...I was thinking that in THIS market, at THIS time, the price is about $25-40K too high on that house. If she were to drop the price (but it would be below what she paid for it 2 yrs ago) by that much, she could sell it next week.
If the job is worth not passing up, look at how it can work out financially to sell for $10-50 less than what you're asking now. Will taking less on the house enable OH to have his 'dream job' in NZ and within 6-12 mos will the sting of taking $50K less on the house have irioned itself out?

It must be worth considering your OH coming across first, with you following once the house is sold... this way he sorts out accomodation etc at this end, and gets to keep the job offer!
Good luck,

What's the job offer? I ask because how difficult it would be for you to secure another in the future seems key to your decision.
Really feel for you :(

Hi, thanks for all your support. Unfortunately OH can't stop earning here to go to NZ because we couldn't afford the repayments without his income.
He did really want this job, but it is the 2nd he's been offered so there does seem to be a good demand (he's in IT).
I'm sorry there are others in the same situation; it sounds like we all need to sell first and then either just go and get a job and permits sorted when we get there or rent for a while here while we start the job hunting and paperwork again.
I'll just keep trying to tell myself that it's for the best :roll On the positive side, we'll have the summer here and then another summer when we get to NZ by the time we get everything sorted :exit
Thanks again for all your support. This really is a rollercoster process isn't it !

ni,
maybe call their bluff..
they may just be saying it to speed things on a bit, after all the job market out here is very much in the job seekers favour..
then if they say its gone then at least ask them to consider for future posts once youre out here.

Hi Sunnyb,
Very sorry to here of the predicament, it is a very frustrating time on the housing market, especially, if like yourselves you need a sale.
With the whole process their is variables, and the feeling of not being in control is the most frustrating.
We put our house on the market last October with a move date of Aug 08, we thought it was to early, and then xmas came and went, and everyone tells you don't worry it will sell.
It has definitely been the most frustrating part, like a pack of cards.
We have sold now, but with three weeks until completion their is still a chance of collapse, which is one of the things this country is very guilty of....allowing gazumping....a deal should be a deal.
Best wishes with whatever happens, that buyer could be just days away

why is the ITA not valid without the job offer?
we submitted ours and shortly afterwards my wife (main applicant) got a job offer. we let nzis know and they sped up our application. during the proces my wife had to turn the job down, again we let nzis know but it didnt make a difference.
my advice would be to continue with your application, drop the price of your house (we've just reduced ours by 10k and will reduce by another 10k if we have to) and i'm sure as your OH is in IT he will have no problem finding work when you get there.
It can be a very emotional process with a lot of stress invilved when things dont go to plan. contact nzis and spek to someone there, explain your situation and ask them if its worth continuing at this point or delaying for a short time before applying again.
we have our blue stickers but we also need to sell our home, i will drop it and drop it until it goes as i see a life in nz as more value to me than a 20, 30 or even 40 thousand pounds inprofit that i have done nothing to earn on the value of my home. if need be i'd start from scratch all over again in nz.

This is a shame.. A shame that the employer won't wait a little longer, especially since your OH works in IT. My employer gave me (at first) 6 weeks to sort out my move, and then the WTR with NZIS, BUT due to a snag with my doctor in Seattle (who made a paperwork mistake ), they had to wait 4 more weeks later for me to arrive in NZ. I was very worried that they would not wait for me. Luckily the hiring manager also was an immigrant (from S. Africa) so she knew things were out of my control & cut me some slack.
About the house, yes indeed try lowering the sale price as other members have suggested. Where are you located anyway? (the US?).
Hope it all works for you.. I really do!

, BUT due to a snag with my doctor in Seattle (who made a paperwork mistake ),
Do you mind letting me know what the paperwork mistake was so we don't repeat it? I'm paranoid that my medical paperwork will be turned away!
