We've just had registration forms through to go on what I assume is the electoral roll - can we do this as UK citizens with PR? Always assumed we couldn't vote...:uhoh

You can if you've lived here >1 yr - it says so on the forms somewhere (we've just had ours through too).

I thought you could just have PR - no time restriction but as Zorbs says, it'll be on the form. You can also call the freephone number 0800 36 76 56

Yep spotted it on the form and it is indeed a year :) Got confused by the have you been at your address for more than a month bit - DoH!

Yes, you have to be here a year before you can vote.

I'm registering for postal vote in the UK for this year, don't want to waste my vote completely, and then register here once I can.

We got ours through and we have only just been here a year - Wednesday in fact!! But the elections aren't for a little while yet so maybe they getting their house in order.... still send mountains of paperwork out though, terribly wasteful. We got ours in triplicate, for us and the kids!! I sent the majority of spare stuff back in an envelope so they could re-use it

We got the forms telling us we HAD to register and I have to admit that we probably didn't look at them closely enough. :o Anyway we both completed the forms, sent them off and have both had confirmations back to say we are on the Electoral Register.

However, I've just now looked at the 'Everything you need to know about enrolling to vote' leaflet and it says:

You are qualified and must legally enrol if:
You are a NZ citizen or a permanent resident of NZ, and
You are 18 years old, or older and
You have lived in NZ for more than one year continuously at some time, and
You are not disqualified.

I think we just read the first line and thought "oh, we've got PR so we need to enrol" - oops! :o

Yep our's say if you are not going to enrol then you have to get in touch with them so that'll be on list of things to do tomorrow :)
