I would be interested to know if it is possible to buy a t.v in the uk before we go to nz because I have heard that electrical goods are a bit pricey in the land of the kiwi, and if so which ones are compatible?

y, just doing a quick comparison between Dick Smith in NZ and the same 27" LCD here in the UK, Dick Smith listed as £360 at todays exch rate, here the same TV is £250. We're taking our TV as i'm led to believe they will work fine. Do a quick search (as i'm too lazy lol) and you'll see theres a fair few threads on the subject :)

Yes they do work if it has the same PAL sound system as here, otherwise you get no sound... and as the analogue TV signal is going soon, maybe something to consider. TV's aren't as cheap as the UK, but you can still get a great bargain if you look around and are prepared to haggle.

Oh, and don't use Dick Smith as a guide, there are a number of places that sell TV's and electrical goods here, usually at a lot less than DS.

Hi there, the tv will work as the video is sent in the same way PAL format, the only difference is the sound, the UK uses PAL I, here in NZ they use PAL B,G,H. If your tv can select different sound carriers then you will be ok.

If you are just going to be using satellite or the terestial digital service which is now coming in then you will have no problems as they bypass this, (same with dvd's etc).

Also very few tv's here have SCART sockets on them, normally just phono connections.

This question has probably already been answered by everyone else :)

You should find most TVs that you could buy today e.g. LCD or Plasma will already be compatible - just check it can cope with PAL B/G

Most TVs in the UK now come with a digital decoder (as they are switching off the analog signal), this is NOT compatible with NZ version of digital TV (same name but not same system), so no point paying for this feature.

If you are wanting to buy a TV then I would check out the comparable prices e.g. on Ferrit - Televisions (http://www.ferrit.co.nz/42795.html) before buying in the UK. Need to consider warranties and if it can be fixed in NZ to see if it is worth the savings.
