Regulating Immigration Advice
In January 2005, the Minister of Immigration announced Cabinet’s agreement to introduce legislation regulating immigration advisors. Once legislation is passed, anyone providing immigration advice will have to be licensed and to comply with a code of conduct. An independent governing body will be established and will be responsible for administering the licensing system. Advisors will be prosecuted for operating illegally, and the Department of Labour (Immigration Services) will be able to refuse applications from unlicensed advisors. Legislation is due to be introduced by May 2005.
