How hard can it be?
I must be becoming Kiwi-fied as I've had the mad idea that we could do our own chimney sweeping - especially when a brush and rod set is just $65!!!
Has anyone else done their own? I'm looking to do the top up method (as opposed to the top down method) as I don't fancy being on the roof!
Plus, when it comes to confirming to insurance it has been swept - does that require a pro or just proof we cleaned it?

I know Ian swept ours last time. I couldn't believe how quickly it needed doing after installing the fire. His mate lent him the rods but I do think he used the top down way. He seems to enjoy going on the roof..... I reckon it's the firefighter in him missing his ladders! :roll :roll
Hadn't even thought about the insurance side of things. :exit

We've done it both ways!
In this house though we did it top down as there is a bend in the flue, near the wood burner. We tied one of my dive weights to some rope and OH got on the roof and dropped it down. Then I pulled the rope/brush down as far as it would come and he pulled it up again... If you are trying this at home, remember to attach some more rope to the brush to pull it up again, especially if you have a kink in your flue :laugh
How can you prove you've cleaned it for insurance though  Our landlord has always cleaned the chimney himself and I haven't a clue how it affects his buildings insurance? Hmm that'll be the building with MY contents in it, had better check!

M once swept our chimney. ONCE! Having shoved the brush up and added all the rods, he said, 'This is quite easy.' Then the rods came down, leaving the brush projecting out of the chimney-pot in classic cartoon fashion. Because of the peculiar shape of our roof, the chimneys aren't easily reached from the ground via an ordinary ladder, and we had to pay a builder neighbour to come with his special ladders and retrieve it!

Moorf- Did you call and ask your insurance company on their take on it? What did they say?
