The popular place in Auckland at the moment is Botany Downs which is being built up with new Housing Estates. It also has a big shopping mall with Restaurants, Cafes etc plus it has Movie theatre, Ice Skating, ten pin bowling etc. Botany also has new High Schools.
Botany isn't too far away from the Motorways about 20 mins to Auck City close to Beaches and Country areas.

It depends on what they're into. Some suburbs are more girl 'friendly', like Parnell, shopping, fashion, and some are more boy 'friendly', like Waitakere or Henderson City, car culture, Westie lifestyle (laidback) etc.

how about vaguely sporty, reasonably well-behaved, chilled? think gucci-loving 14 yr old gymnast hanging out at the beach/ movies when homework done. and definately INDEPENDENT.

Did I mention Parnell? ;)

Most Eastern suburbs would probably fit the bill, like Kohimarama, St. Heliers Bay, Bucklands Beach, Eastern Beach, and Takapuna Beach on the North Shore. Mind you, they're also the most expensive places to buy property too!

there is a strong line of irony to that.

parnell has come up before and is to be thoroughly checked out. am i correct in assuming that it is like davenport in that heritage factor means building something modern yet sympathetic or refreshing something terrible would not be smiled upon?

My brother and sister in law live in Dannemora near Botany Downs......
If you can afford to live there good luck!
There (fairly nice but not stunning) 5 year old house has doubled in price since they bought it....... just topped the 1,000,000.

Unbelievable.

Parnell use to be a run-down suburb of inner Auckland. It was 're-discovered' and re-developed into one of the trendiest, most expensive suburbs the city has.

However, it still has a number of fine historical buildings that are open to the public.

Check out this site (http://www.parnell.net.nz/) in order to get an idea of what the place is like.
