Hi All,
I'm moving to Wellington from Dublin, Ireland on the 24th April. My OH is a kiwi and we're not bringing much possessions with us so I guess I have it a little easier then other people here! I've handed my notice in to work, packed up our apartment and moved back with my parents for the last few weeks. Everything's organised I just need to make it through the next 5 weeks!
I'm a little apprehensive about moving so far away from home and only knowing my OH. I'm hoping people will be friendly enough and I'll make some friends. I'll have to look around this site for ways to meet people!
I'm also hoping the weather doesn't get too bad before we arrive! We're mad going now and having two winters. I don't know what we were thinking!
Anyway, if anyone has any advice for settling in in Wellington and meeting new people I'd appreciate it! My OH obviously has friends etc there and I'm hoping they'll be friendly enough. They're dying to meet the Irish girl that kept him in Dublin for so long!

Hi Ellenmellon
Nice to talk to you again. It is a small (virtual) world!
This site was recommended to me on the other site so there's probably more people you've come across before around.

Hi there and welcome!
I wouldn't worry about meeting people. We're not worried and we don't know a soul in NZ (except these very friendly virtual ones).
I'd be more worried having to move back in with my parents ;)
We're doing the double winter thingy too, though not arriving until mid June.
Trying my hardest to see the upside in that :laugh

There's only one upside. Skiing! I'm going next week for a week in Austria and will try NZ in July/August.
Any yes, moving back in with my parents is not fun - even temporarily!

Just thought of another one: we get to view rental properties in their worst shape, no surprises after 6 months!

Hi Watna
We arrived here last April, coming from Wales, and we had lovely weather for a good few weeks in Hawkes Bay.
We also arrived shipping 12 boxes over and bringing 6 cases, sohad to start from scratch.
I am sure everything will work out well for you, it certainly has for us.
I wish you well for the rest of your plans!

Welcome to Wellington. I too had to stay between the in-laws & the parents for 5 weeks before joining my OH out here & did that take a lot of patience (& lots of bottles of NZ wine to keep me sane!!!).
My advice would be to get a job as soon as possible as that is the best way of meeting people here although you're lucky that you're going to have your OH's friends/family around you. We know no-one here at all, but everyone here is really friendly & as its a "small" city you end up seeing the same faces around where you live. Where are you hoping to settle when you arrive? We rented when we first came & felt like we were in a limbo for a while, but now we've moved into our own place & have some great neighbours around us who are really good at lending us stuff until our container turns up!!!
Good luck with it all & if you want help with anything else then just let me know. You'll love it. Yesterday was really hot, but the northerlies are around today but its still warm. I'm sure the weather will hold out until you get here. Just be prepared for the hair-raising flight into Wellington as it can be a tad wild.

Thanks for all the best wishes everyone!
Ellenmelon was right, people are all very nice and helpful here!
We're going travelling on the way for 2 weeks so won't arrive in NZ until 10th May. I'm not holding out any hopes for the weather! Will be staying with my OH's parents in Whanganui for a few days and then we'll head to Wellington to find an apartment etc. We're not looking to buy for a while so will be renting. It's great to be going with my OH, he knows the areas we should live in etc. I think he said we'll be looking at Mount Victoria/Roseneath.
After reading through the site a little bit I'm concerned how often the standard of houses has been mentioned. My OH has told me all about his student houses and how there used to be ice on the windows and how most apartments/houses don't have central heating. I'm a very cold person so I'm dreading living somewhere cold!

definately try for a newer place as it should be better insulated but thats not a guarantee! you're actually looking for one at a good time, when its cooler so you should be getting a better idea of what a home is like in winter. beware the places you go to with heaters blasting in every room...in my opinion.
