Questions if anyone can help:

1. My wife (Gill) and I are thinking of emigrating. I would be looking for similar job as an academic, would my wife also have to get a job in order to enter NZ?

2. Would if be possible for my wife to work part time (which is what she does now)

3. If we left emigrating for 3 yrs I would be 53 and Gill would be 56. I would be fine for immigrant worker status - but would it be possible for Gill to enter NZ - how?

4. Gill is a qualified teacher - if she got points on that basis does it mean she has to get an offer of a job in teaching? What if she worked in a day nursery instead?

Sorry but these are questions that are going through our minds to help us decide when and how to make the move. Advice much appreciated. :clap

I'm pretty sure that only the main applicant counts in terms of both age and work status. Such that your wife could get an open work visa and find a job when she gets there (part-time or full).

If your wife is the main applicant I believe that changes things.

I'm sure someone else will be along who has been through this to give you more information.

Good Luck!

Spot on Liz - only the main applicant is required to have a job / job offer / skills to get a job... :nice1

With PR, yes.

Hi Julian.

if you got Permenant residency (PR) the choice of work is up to you, there are no restrictions, even if you applied as the principal applicant, and your wife was named on the EOI, or vice versa.

I am afraid, I don't know enough about a WTR (work to residancy visa) to comment on it, because I understand that there are more restrictions.

good luck

thanks Liz for the speedy response:clap

I would be the main applicant

Basically my wife don't want to be under pressure to work or do a particular job, I'm sure she will work :D but if the pressure is off that would help.:raebanana

I'll hope others can confirm

Thanks
Julian

If you left in 3 years time I believe Gil would be too old to apply under the Skilled Migrant Category (I think age limit is 56 yrs or younger). If you left beforehand she could indeed be the main applicant and yes, the onus would then be on her to secure a job/job offer in teaching...

In some instances people can get PR with no job offer and are given a certain amount of time to secure jobs and activate visas - but this isn't the norm.

if I understand this right then ...

I get a job offer from a University in NZ (which I am thinking may be one of the professions more likely to offer jobs to people outside NZ)

I apply as main applicant but include detail for both of us (Gill and I).

Assuming we or I?? had enough points we could sell up and both take up a new life in NZ - based on me working as main applicant and Gill wouldn't have to have a job offer or anything and would be free to take up any part time job that she fancied in NZ?

Flippin' Hec there is such a lot to think through!!! LOL :laugh

advice here is great ... the free, generous and cooperative nature of the human race on web communities gives us all hope in humanity!

thanks :cheers

If because of family commitments we left emigrating for 3 yrs and I was the main applicant (53 by that time) and Gill by that time would be 56 - would that matter?
What I mean is would she be unable to emigrate with me?
Would she be unable to work?
sorry for the barrage of questions!

As long as you pass your medicals and you don't have a dodgy police record* lurking in your past then a job offer and enough points is all you'll need..... and what you say above is pretty much spot on.

Your wife will receive a work visa which will allow her to take up any job she likes - oh, except in the sex industry, immigrants aren't allowed!! :D

*no dodgy album jokes!!!!

Julian

I don't believe so - I think it goes on the main applicant's age... someone else can probably confirm that.

This isn't strictly true, if you get a PR based on a job offer then you (the principal applicant) will likely have a section 18A placed on your PR which means you have to remain in that job for the first three months. After this time you can have this condition removed from the PR and are then allowed to do any work you want.

Yes that Sec 18A is correct. As for the WTR, you have to remain in your current job for at least 2 years (I think) and also after 2 years you will be able to apply for PR. Should the principa be awarded a WTR, the partner will be eligible for a work visa with the same length as the principal's WTR visa too.
