Hi

I am new to the forum and have read some of the threads but need some advice if possible.

I received a year's job offer for a nursing job in Wellington to cover maternity leave in Jan 08 and sent my registration docs off at end of Jan. They were received mid Feb but I am struggling to get any sense out of anyone at the council. They just say that my first assessment has been delayed and I will be getting a letter shortly:wah

can anyone tell me what comes after 1st assessment and what I can expect to happen now - apart from wait? Also what would be a realsitic timeline does anyone know beofre my registration is through?

Finally - I am only applying for a 1 year visa as we are going to use this to go try NZ before commiting ourselves. If you take all the paperwork down to the NZ council in London how long does it then take to get a visa?

many thanks

Hello and welcome to the forum :)

My wife is a nurse (renal) and although she's holding back submitting her NZNC paperwork until we've returned back from our NZ 'recce' trip next month, the agency she's signed up with (Tonix) have advised the NZNC have a backlog of approx. 4 months

We're also thinking of applying for WTR visa, only in our case a 30 month one (plus student visa for little one)... but if the nursing registration is going to take 4 months, then we may has well apply for PR whilst we're in the UK.

Timewise for a work visa, some folk have obtained one within 1 week, but typically you're looking around 2 to 4 weeks absolute tops... other members may wish to confirm exactly what paperwork you require though.

Good luck with everything :nice1

Thank you for your good wishes and advice.

Have to admit to being somewhat despondent with the NZ nursing council and there organisation. I had been so impressed with the way things had been handled by the CApital & Coast hospital to then meet this brick wall.

I am just hoping they honour my year contract after what could be a considerable delay by the look of it. I did hear from ther council yesterday and after 6 weeks they haven't even done the 1st assessment which shows if I have provided all the paperwork :wah Doesn't bode well.

So frustrating isn't it... they certainly need to get their act together, reports state record numbers of nurses are leaving the NHS at the moment so the NZNC need to be more prepared for the onslaught :D

Hello! I can understand the stress you're under - We wanted to get jobs once we're in NZ so I hadn't applied for nurse reg. before submitting the EOI. It got selected quickly and I heard from someone on this forum that the nurse reg. might not get to me in time for the ITA submission!! I've sent reg off but haven't done medicals etc yet as I'm aware that we might have to wait for the EOI to lapse and start over - at least we'll have all we need then. Still going through the process of selling house etc. So, we will get to NZ but it may take a few months longer than we thought. I hope things work out for you - I think most of the nurses going to NZ have the same problems with the NZNC so we'll all in it together! My initial panic has worn off but I'm still prone to ramble (sorry!) Good Luck!

Hi,Caenurse
I wish you all the best of luck with your application.I am a nurse myself and I ll be applying to NZNC soon too.All I had experience with was UKCC (at the time) and had to wait 2,5 months for my Pin N to come through(following 9 months supervised practice I had to undergo in order to obtain one as overseas qualified nurse).
Anyway hope it goes well and we might meet at the hospital one day- we are moving to Wellington at the end of June...I would grately appreciate if I could PM you sometimes for an advice on the process..

Carole, you need to post once more, on any thread. Once you have done 5 posts, the PM facility will be available to you. You click on a member's name, and a drop-down box shows you that option, and others.

I was advised that registration can take anything from 6 -9 months. They do have a habit of losing some of your documents - my transcript needed to be sent 3 times. It took mine about 5 months in total. After you get your registration do remember that you need to apply for an Annual Practising Certificate too before you can start work. If you need any more help or have any more questions - please ask. :yes

How long does the annual practisinh certificate take to get? Could I get that once I am in Wellington or does it have to be done here?

If it is painful as the registration I give up now!!:(

The APC is easy, you just send back the form that comes with the registration ( and fee! ) and it's back by return post. The DHB here refunds the fee. Valid for 3, 6, 9 or 12 months depending on your birthday. Beware though, if it expires before you start working in NZ, you have to resubmit some documents, character refs I think.
The NZNC were actually very fast with my reg, once they'd stopped losing all my documents.
Don't give up & Good Luck.

With the delay on the actual registration I'm almost afraid to ask how long it might then take to get an Annual Practising Certificate. Any advice?

I was fortunate my nurse registration only took 3 months and that was with NZNC being shut for nearly 3 weeks at christmas and having a 5 week backlog. They have changed the guidelines and are now asking for hours practised with the other stuff to save asking later when you apply for your annual practising certificate so this helps a bit. My advise is to get all your documents sent together and keep chasing them up to check they have arrived and keep records of whats been sent.Good luck with the process.

Oops lost the main bit of the post!!

Hi Philip

Just got a work visa for 12 months as that is the length of my contract. Meant no police check ( although had to get one for registration) and no medical. Cost £80 to get. My partner has got a family stream also for a year and also costing £80.

If I can be of any more help just let me know
