Hi,
We're new to this forum. Me and my partner Dale have made the bold decision to move to NZ to work. I'm a Paediatric nurse, and Dale in in the surfboard business (design, art, and shaping and has his own company over here in the UK), and he also is a cleaning supervisor at the local hospital.
We are fed up with the expense of Britain at the mo. :exit

We have looked into a few places that might interest us to live. We want sunshine and as much warmth as poss. We've shown interest so far in the Gisbourne, Napier, New Plymouth and Christchurch areas.

We'd really appreciate your advice and tips as to where is best.
We love the outdoors, but don't want to be too far from some civilisation etc. Also need to be close to a hospital which has childrens wards.

Much Love

Livi and Dale xxx

Hi Livi & Dale and welcome to the forum :)

There's plenty of nurses on board who can help with the registration/application system... my OH will be submitting her paperwork to the NZNC towards the end of April (after our 'recce' trip)... she's 15 years experience in renal and has been advised there's plenty of work to be had :D

We too enjoy the great outdoors and at the moment the South Island is our preference, but I guess we'll initially have to go where the work is.

Enjoy the rollercoaster ride :nice1

Hi Livi and Dale

If you want sunshine, you just have to come to Hawkes Bay!

It is a beautiful place, sunshine most of the time, and beautiful scenery, as i am sure you will be told by others on the forum, beautiful coastline, vineyards,etc..........

I work at Hawkes Bay Hospital, which i am sure you could contact direct for vacancies, they are always looking for nursing staff.

You have the option of living in Hastings, which we do, and are about 15min walk from Hospital, theres Napier which again is beautiful and about 20min drive, with beautiful coastline and also a lot of people live around Central Hawkes Bay area such as Waipakurau, about 3/4hr - 1hr drive (? correct me if i am wrong).

Good luck with your plans, i am sure it will all work out!

Hi. Im a Hawkes Bay gal - so am a huge fan of " The Bay." The only downer re H.B. is the generally lousy surf. Only one half way decent surf break in Haumoana. But yes it does have a paed ward.

Gisborne is a laid back sort of a place and NZs answer to Kelly Slater is from here. A very warm generally sunny place.

You may want to consider Northland . The winterless north has excellent surfing. Whangarei hospital is a busy one . Again a relaxed lifestyle.

The surfing is also not too bad around Tauranga - sometimes VERY good. A very busy regional hospital here too. Warm and sunny.

Gnarly sufing around New Plymouth - a tad cooler than the East coast of the NI.

YES we are a surfing mad family !!!! Good luck !

OOh, we'd not considered Northland. Because it's warmer though does it get busy? We're wanting somewhere quietish, and away from the hussle and bussle of the tourist trail. (we live in cornwall at the mo and it's just full up with numpty visitors, and too many people "emigrating" from elsewhere in the country). We wana get away from that whole thing. :exit :nice1

Thankyou for the input with regards to the surf. Dale would love to be able to surf somewhere there's not more people than fish, if you know what I mean. Hence, he doesn't surf much over here, cold and overcrowded. :(

Thanks again,
Livi and Dale xx

You are going to love NZ! We have a huge shortage of nurses, and the surfing compared to the UK is sublime. Like Kowhai said, I'd stick to the North Island, there are great surfing spots all over, but not so great in the South Island, and you'd freeze your buns off in the winter way down south.....I've got friends in New Plymouth who actually moved their because of the surfing, not as warm as the East Coast but excellent swells. Good luck, it'll be a blast!:cheers

Cheers Sharon,
We've not got the ball rolling yet with regards to registration and visas yet. As soon as things start to kick off, I'll let you know and I can then email various people about jobs. I can't see things happening though for a good 8-9 months. We have a house to finish and sell over here. The market is a bit dyre at the mo. Prices are stagnent, and nobody is buying.

I'll be sure to do a few more posts though and then I can PM!!!

Hello again. Northland surf beaches busy? During the school holidays the little grommits like to come out in droves ! But really I do think you'd find Northland an idyllic location given your desire for peace and your ? love of the ocean. The only " disadvantage " ( btw Im guessing you havent got any kids ? ) , is its isolation, and while warm all year round can be rainy over the winter months. Not monsoonish though !! People like to retire here. Its NEVER busy !! Whangarei is the main town.

Gissie ( Gisborne ), once again I would give this wee town some serious consideration. The regional hospital has a paed ward. Its a very friendly, surf mad place. Im personally very fond of it.

As Wonderbob has said New Plymouth is great too. Actually you can't go wrong ! Anyone who really loves the ocean will be very happy in any coastal town here.

Wow, cheers for all the info guys!! Is Gisborne a chilled place aswell? Not too many people? And does it rain less than the Northland? We live in Cornwall at the mo and are so fed up with the rain!!!
Also, you say that Northland is very quiet. We don't want to be in a city, but would like to be near some shops etc (maybe in walking or cycling distance.)

Even typing this, I'm very excited for the move!! I wana go now!!
