Dear All,

I'm currently living in Thailand, and seriously looking for a job in Wellington, NZ.

As I will be having a couple-week business trip in NZ this coming July 2008, and will also be granted a 1-year valid work visa.

1. If that's a case, Am I counted as "eligible working in NZ". If so, I then plan to conduct personal interviews with recruitment companies in NZ.

2. If I got a job offered, would the company hire me immediately without going through all the offer of employment processes?

I do greatly appreciate your kind comments on my questions. Thank you.

Hi and welcome :)

You asked:

If you are in possession of a one-year work visa then yes, you can work. Make sure your visa doesn't have any "conditions" that preclude you from doing certain jobs.

Employers may certainly help you to update your visa to something more permanent - or you could start the PR process once you are in employment.

Just one thought - some employers like to see a visa lasting more than 1 year - OH's company wanted to see him have a 2 yr visa before they'd make the job "permanent". It will differ from employer to employer.

You also don't say what line of work you are in - this may affect your chances of finding a relevant job.

Hello All,

You're all incredibly very kind here. I do greatly thank you all for your posts.

Moorf - My business line is Oil & Gas / Downstream Fuels Marketing.

- I've been advised to go for international recruitment companies having branches/connections in NZ as they're more likely to assist candidates on the offer of employment. Is this right?

Thank you for your kind comments.

Hi and welcome to the forums.

Going with a recruiter would indeed be a splendid idea. Things have changed drastically in the past years and as with the need of NZ to have the best people with the best skills, recruiters can assist you in finding a job that would best suit both your competencies and a good culture fit. Not to mention that they are the best people who manage to bargain a good compensation package. You will find some recruiters nice, and some who act like dinosaurs, but I suggest that you let your fingers do the clicking and read the background of the recruitment company first prior to submitting your CV to them. (*Tip - look out for the recruitment firms whose strengths are the industry/ trade that you are currently practising.)

Hope this helps. Cheers
