Everyone keeps talking about NZ winters and it is best not to start your new life then.
Please give us a run down, how do they compare with UK winters.
I know some/most housing causes problems ie no central heating.
But in general what are they like. temp, weather, etc
Looking at going to Christchurch so winters there really.
Thank all and have a good weekend.

We've had one winter in Chch and compared to Essex winters they are milder temp. wise. The few frosts we had were just on the grass and were generaly gone by 10 am. There were a few snow flurries but they didn't settle for more than half a day. Fairly dry, not a lot of rain, some good sunny days that were warm (usualy when there was a Nor'westerly blowing) But it is windier than we are used too and when its from anywhere south its chilly and seems to creep in all of the gaps it can. The weather here is dominated by the wind, ask anyone in chch about the weather and its starts off with 'oh its a westerly/ notheasterly/southerly. Its not that the winters are cold but that a lot of the houses are not insulated or heated.

That's good news - although some bits of Essex get a bit windy too!

Its not so much the force of the wind just that its often windy.

Seems that you need to get the right house, and not wear drafty jumpers, ponchos can't be going down well as a fashion item for winter.
I like a nice frosty morning (now and again) and snow fluries don't worry me, seasons are great, sort of why I want to go to the south island rather than the north.
Great info
Thanks

was last year the 10th then, because it was a lot windier than where we lived in the UK.
