Hi All,
Listening to morning report on Thursday 20/04/08, about 8:40. There was an article about the current price of fuel in NZ . The expert was saying that after this Easter petrol was expected to reach$2.00 per litre. Well, that was not big news!
But it was what he said after that was more interesting. He went on to say that it would go even higher, not only due to the price of a barrel of oil, but the NZD was presently too high against other currencies. Even if the price of oil fell back, when the NZD falls then prices will still go up due to the exchange rate changing, as more NZD will be required to buy the same amount.
They then discussed the knock on effect of this, high imports prices and food costs, overseas travel, but this seemed somewhat curtailed. As if “we really don’t want to go there“,.
In addition those happy residents of Auckland already face a regional 5% increase in fuel. Western BOP, are proposing a fuel tax increase to fund the new motorway from Tauranga to Parengaroa (why they need this is really questionable, imho).
AirNZ, are putting up the price of domestic flights and Aussie flights and by the end of April, will put up their long haul flights. Interestingly in the NZherald, it claims that half of your long haul fare goes toward the fuel cost. So it looks as if we can all expect a significant increase in that department!
Looks like It’s gonna be a rough and expensive ride, to wherever you’re going !!
Anybody using the car less or alternative transport??
