HI
When my sister and her hubby come over in 4 wks, they are going down to Wellington for a day or two
I have had a look at the Interislander ferry, and gather some of you have been on it.
They would only go over on a daytrip - is this worth it ? Is there anything they can do/visit on foot there ?
Just wondering if its worth it for them...............
Any advise greatfully recd

The interislander is good but it takes 3 hours each way, so wouldn't allow much time left in the day. There is only Picton next to the Ferry, which is OK but I would rather spend the time in Wellington.
If you were going for a few days then you could go up to Nelson and Abel Tasman which are great areas to visit, but don't think I would go just for the day.
If you want to go around Wellington harbour then there are other options e.g. a trip to Matiu/Sommes island.

Nice crossing on a good day, but like Ian says it takes three hours each way and Picton is ermmmm well one blink and you'll miss it! :uhoh
If it's sunny they're better off getting the Eastbourne ferry, on the off peak crossings you can sometimes get a commentary if there is a group on board. It's a good tour round Wellington Harbour.
It's a good view of Welly from the 'other side', they could have lunch in Day's Bay cafe which is very nice and walk along the beach before getting the ferry back. You don't have to book in advance.
You don't have to book so if the weather's ropey they can do something else, like Te Papa. :nice1 There's masses to do in Welly.

Thanks guys!
I will check out the Eastbourne ferry.
Its going to be a treat for them as they are going for one night and we wanted to book a second and something special for them too, as they are like us, both birthdays in April.

Hi,
As far as I know the Interislander does one day trips to the South Island with some wine tasting included. That seems like a nice thing to do?! Check their website. And the route on the ferry is amazing - everytime I have been on it, I have enjoyed it very much.
Another idea would be to go to Picton on the ferry and to fly back from Picton on Sounds Air and do some winetasting and touring in the region in between. It would make a great day out, I am sure.
Cheers,
Anita

My partner, and his mum and aunt did a wine tour november last year. you go over on the ferry and a mini bus takes you round various wineries. They realy enjoyed it and it was all done in one day..

Sounds Air fly frequently between Wellington and Blenheim. It doesn't cost much more to fly than go on the ferry, but it only takes 20 minutes.

I thought the ferry trip was terrific--spectacular scenery and views that are difficult to get otherwise. True, Picton isn't spectacular, but.... More time in Wellington is definitely a good idea, but the boat trip (two Decembers ago) was fun. Susan
