Was watching a programme on Discovery Channel last night about volcanic eruption of Yellowstone National Park....so got me wondering about the risks in NZ. Found some interesting information on Auckland risks, in case anyone is interested!

I liked the bit in the bottom right about predicting eruptions.

The last time Ruapehue went off, was it last sept??, there was no prior seismic activity. A guy in a DOC hut had a boulder land on his legs, which came thru the roof.

Have you seen the domain exhibit about Rangitoto, erupting?

Lucky the Auckland field has been dormant for quite a while and there has not been much activity since last Feb's 07 shake. Which was big for AKL.

I'd worry more about the giant Tsunami that will wipe us all out.

Happy Days!!

Volcanically Akl is pretty benign, Wellington on the other hand is sitting on a very active fault that runs all the way up through Hawkes Bay and out to sea.

The Yellowstone supervolcano is fascinating, isn't it? Yes, we do have one here, it is Taupo which is a huge volcanic crater formed in the single biggest explosion in the last few thousand years. It ejected 1170 cubic kilometers of rock about 26500 years ago.

If that went up again it would really ruin the fishing.
