We bought a house and, as seems to be customary in NZ the chattels included the dishwasher etc. We had a pile of receipts, manuals and guarantees left by the previous owners. The dishwasher broke down and we were working out how and when to replace it with the one we brought from the UK when I noticed on the receipt that the purchaser (two house owners ago) had 'bought' a five year insurance cover plan on it. The dishwasher was three years old so I phoned the store and asked whether the insurance was transferrable. There was no quibble or sharp intake of breath - the appliance was insured not the person who took out the insurance.

Outcome, one insurance claim number, one repairman out the same day, one dishwasher repaired and fully functioning. Check your paperwork! You know you're worth it!

By the way - has anyone else noticed there's no hole for dishwasher salt over here?? It's taken a while for me to work it out but there's no hard water here either.

We had the 'hole' for dishwasher salt and the instructions said that it needed some, but after ages trying to locate some, to be told that it wasn't needed in NZ as no hard water - check the Kettle, no furring at all :) .

The salting action's in the washing tabs these days anyway. Or maybe it's not, in NZ.

There is hard water in NZ, as some of us are discovering. In a drought they switch to bore hole supplies, which is even harder than London water. However when they are back on river water the lime disappears. This assumes the elements havent blown in the meantime.

Mainly though its very soft.

That is excellent. We shall keep it in our mind about the insurance.
Thanks :)
