I'm looking into a lodge in Kingsland for temporary accommodation in Auckland.

Can anyone tell me if it's a nice and safe suburb?

Thanks! :D

Yes, Kingsland is safe. It's very central too - the centre of town is walkable, takes about 30 minutes and there's a regular bus service as well as a train. There are cafes, a burger bar and restaurants (Indian, Thai, Chinese) as well.

Most of the houses in Kingsland were built early last century, a lot of which have been nicely restored, others which are rented out in a sadder state. Quiet streets, lots of trees. It's separated from the more upmarket suburbs of Grey Lynn/Ponsonby by the western motorway. You can easily walk from Kingsland to Mt Eden , climb up and get a panoramic city view from the lookout point at the top.

Kingsland is a great suburb - and, as Alan said, very safe. I ran through the main street at 6am, and felt very safe. In fact it didn't even cross my mind to be concerned about my safety going out alone in the dark!
There are some nice restaurants and bars, a couple of food stores and good transport links into the city.
The only thing it lacks is a decent sized supermarket, but there is Foodtown in Grey Lynn and Mt Eden, both of which are walking distance.

And what about Grey Lynn? Is it nice and safe suburb?
I looked through Education Review Reports of primary schools:
Grey Lynn School - Decile rating 5
St Joseph's School (Grey Lynn) - Decile rating 3

Decile 1 schools draw their students from areas of greatest socio-economic disadvantage,
Decile 10 from areas of least socio-economic disadvantage.

Does it mean that Gray Lynn is area of high socio-economic disadvantage?

For examlpe, Decile rating of Mt Eden Normal Primary School is 9.

Grey Lynn is considered more upmarket than Kingsland. Lots of old restored villas on quiet streets, some of which sell for well over $1 million. It's right next to Ponsonby - once a run down inner city suburb but now prestigious and likewise full of lovely old restored villas. Ponsonby/Grey Lynn share lots of cafes and restaurants and good shops with everything you need. You can catch the Link bus from Ponsonby Rd which divides both areas - the Link is a flat fare bus($1.60) which does a circle of the inner city so some people drive to Ponsonby/GL and park and then catch the Link to work - saves the hassle of trying to find an expensive parking space downtown.
